MAGNEPAN SMG ANY REASON NOT TO BUY?

Any rewiring is easy but a little time consuming. I did the treble sides of some MG1s. Magnepan was very helpful in getting me what I needed and answering some questions I had during the process

You can try if you want. However, you'll get little volume and if the amplifier is SS there is the possibility of releasing the "magic smoke". This is a problem that tube amps usually don't have. A low power tube amp may run out of power. However, they don't self-destruct.

I ran a pair of 2.5s on an h/h 330C and a Stereo 70. More is better, but it was very adequate with either.

i got them home - then put together - from walmart -the connections - converter box - to connect from my cheep tv to my “new to me mcintosh 2505 … the cheapest cables and the worst source ever and they sound way better than i could have imagined…

so this is where i begin again. i am so excited!!!6DBD37E5-B93B-41CD-95A1-824BA92DAC58.jpeg

Cats can easily ruin them
I was thinking about finding a set of nice SMGs, but the cat warning gave me paws (sorry...). I've got two cats with front claws, and they occasionally go after cloth on furniture. So, by "ruin them" do you mean put runs in the speaker grill cloth, or actually damage the mylar drivers?

Both. I've seen little cat nail punctures in the mylar, and shredded grills

From the front there is a sheet of perforated metal that will not allow damage the mylar. On the back the grille cloth is visible and below that is the wiring glued to the mylar and this could be damaged by claws.
You can get pics of naked Magneplanars on the web to see how they are built.

On the newer ones, it's the other way around, with the perforated metal on the rear.

Aren't the 20 and 30 push pull with metal on both sides? I answered as if he was looking at SMGs but yes there are some with rear perf-plate and front mylar/wires. Be good for arcsound to evaluate the speakers he would think of getting as to cat friendly.

Oh that's true, the SMG is an older model, I was thinking about the newer LRS, 1.7, etc which have the mylar on the front and perforations on the back. Never heard a 20 or 30 but imagine they must be impressive!

Also have two cats. With fence, mine haven't been touched.

What to drive them with?
I drive my 1.7i, with Bryston 3B NRB, 125 wpc@8 0hms. It may double its wpc @4 ohms.
Or Rogue Cronus Magnum tube integrated, 100 wpc.
Either do fine job. I listen under 75 dbs at 10 feet away.
Bryston SS gives better bass control, IMO.

You want an amp that's made for 4 ohm loads.

It should, much higher damping factor.

Reason I sold the ADS 1590/2 was because the bass sounded bad with the tube amps I'm keeping. OK with solid state but damping factors below 25 can't control big woofers, (two per box with the 1590). I'll keep the Magneplanars and the tube amps either way as I haven't had them set up together, yet. Soon, though
