Magneplanar SMGa Repair - Any New Ideas?

No. What she recommended is to stick down any loose wires with weldwood contact cement ( I told her this is what I was using and she agreed it was a good choice and by the way they no longer use the 77 spray) and then brush on a coat of the WHITE 3M water based contact cement instead of the milloxane. I did and it's like a latex membrane holding the wires to the mylar.

I'll be trying them with a real amp today. Don't worry.

Still no suggestions for a cap?

Thanks

Eric

Cool! We're all in agreement. What was the product number on the 3M white that you used?

How about a Jantzen or perhaps an Erse PEx available from an AK advertiser. I'd practice my soldering technique before I'd attempt it on the speaker.

Good luck! I'm happy you have them singing again.

I do have to say that my Hafler P3000 pushes them quite nicely.

Back to listening.

Eric

Once you get used to the Maggies, I'd be interested in a comparison with the DQ30s. I've always liked the DQs. I noticed you have an MK sub. I crossover to a pair MKs at around 55-80Hz depending upon what speakers I have in rotation.

In all fairness I do believe the SMG's need a recap. Maybe not. I'm not sure.

Also, their placement in my office is far from optimal.

Funny thing is I bought my first pair of DQ-10s to replace my first pair of Maggie's. They were MG2s if memory serves. The Dahlquists did everything the Maggie's did with no sweet spot limitations. The DQ30s are a much better speaker than the 10s and quite frankly there's no comparison between them and the SMGs. Never the less the SMGs are wonderful speakers.

Thanks

I used Solen caps for the crossover upgrades. The problem is that they are round so they 'pooch out' with the new sox installed.

Cheers,

David

Have you ever noticed that all the cuts on KOB are full of over modulation and other distortions?

I guess the guy at the board finally woke up because Flamenco Sketches sounds really good.

Tweeters in or out?

I just downloaded the OM but no mention of what was the preferred method.

Thanks

Eric

I run my MG-1Cs with the tweeters out. I have tried them in, but preferred them out. I also have them 4 feet from any wall and toed in slightly. Maggies, like other planars, have a narrow sweet spot; however, I view that as a feature because of the airy open sound outside of the sweet spot.
