Obviously not going to replace your Rectilinears in the living room today, but the concept might have some potential... need to think about this and tinker a bit, to be sure.

If you could rig up a big enough resonator, something like an old gramophone horn, with a little added creative work this could be part of a very cool sci-fi/steampunk-esque speaker system!
 
I did this several years ago. I wonder where that drive got off to? I took out all the platters and motor and hooked the arm up with a bit of foam stuffed in to keep it from clunking all the time. The hole where the motor had been was big enough to shove your ear inside and end up with a crazy looking mono headphone thing. I honestly have heard worse sounding ear buds. :smoke:
 
I have done this too, you need a LOT of power for just a little bit of terrible sound :P When you think about it, there is so little surface area that you could never make it sound even slightly decent... fun to do though!

PS: all of the sound comes from the read/write arm moving
