Hello, I have two JVC MXGT80 systems, including one that my parents got new over 20 years ago, and need some advice replacing the factory tweeters as it seems that everyone, my child-self included, let their curiosity get the best of them and pushed in those shiny tweeter domes (very dumb of JVC to leave them exposed like they did). The set in my room (the other in my garage with completely ruined tweeters) has one untouched tweeter and it sounds perfect; however, the other tweeter is damaged from the dome being pushed in and the paper cone being creased, and I can hear the difference which is bothering me quite a bit.
Unfortunately, there is absolutely no way to obtain replacement tweeters unless you find a used system, and even then most systems for sale have at least one tweeter (if not both) whose dome was pushed in. So before I resort to that I wanted to try and find a cheaper solution with parts that are readily available so I can fix both the system in my room and in my garage.
The factory tweeter has an impedance of 6 ohms along with the midrange speaker it is wired in parallel with, and both are powered by 55 watts. The tweeter also has a 50v 2.2uF capacitor on it, though I don't understand how it's wired in.
I went ahead and bought two pairs of generic, "Hi-Fi" silk tweeters off of Amazon for 15 bucks a pair, along with a bunch of 50v 2.2uF capacitors for 8 bucks. The new tweeters have an impedance of 6 ohms but are only rated for 30 watts.
Do you think these new tweeters would work? And how would I install the capacitor on these, just solder them to the positive wire? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
