I think anytime you apply a filter,IT CAN MAKE IT WORSE!!!!!

The cassette player in our car for example has a button to ENABLE OR DISABLE NR -- I always leave it disabled AS IT SOUNDS WORSE WITH IT ON!!

My YAMAHA decks have a "PLAY TRIM" function that is really effective when you play cassettes with Dolby ON. You just turn the "PLAY TRIM" until the music regains it's sparkle.

Enabling noise reduction on a tape that was not recorded with the same type of noise reduction will almost always result in degraded sound.

Most NR systems rely on an encode/decode set of parameters. When properly set up and executed the desired effect of noise reduction is achieved without a loss of fidelity.

Usually in factory units it's some generic NR system.I you buy an aftermarket unit the results are much better.
