MONTESANO, Wash. (AP) - An Elma man was killed by accidentally urinating on a downed power line after a one-car crash near Montesano.

Grays Harbor County sheriff's Deputy Dave Pimentel said Monday that 50-year-old Roy Messenger was not seriously hurt after he collided with a power pole Friday night and called a relative to pull his car out of the ditch.

When family members arrived they found Messenger electrocuted. Pimentel says Messenger apparently urinated into a roadside ditch but didn't see the live wire.

Pimentel says there will be an autopsy but burn marks indicated the way the electricity traveled through the body.

Very sad to hear that this guy died. I assume alcohol was involved and he was feeling no pain. OUch. As one comment mentions - every man's worst nightmare.

Whew! That was close! Damnation, you can only rent beer! Be a while before the Sheriff gets here, guess I'll drain the sump... Lookit them sparks! Better put that out!

Sad? The loss of any life is sad, though this may make the Darwin Awards.

I dunno... it's kinda hard not to notice a downed live power line.

The last one I saw was setting the asphalt on fire. Not only was the light extremely bright you could hear it buzzing and sizzling.

I don't know about that. I knew a guy that ran into a power pole and he wasn't in any shape to notice the power pole, much less junk in the ditch afterward.

Single car accident + outdoors peeing afterward lead us to assume he was drunk, but we don't know that. What if he crashed because of icy conditions or swerved to miss an animal in the road?

It's ironic that he survived a crash to die of peeing.

Be interesting to see the coroner report... Mythbusters pretty convincingly debunked the urban legend about peeing on a 3rd rail. The stream isn't continuous enough unless you're right up on the live target. They had to rig the test to kill the dummy.

Oh man, that has to be in the top 10 of the WORST ways to die. When I was young, I worked on trains that were essentially retired Amtrak coaches, with cables connecting power from one car to the next, that have plugs & sockets. One of the first things the old-timers told me was, NEVER relieve yourself between the cars. :nono: These days, the electrician tapes them off, but I never felt very inclined to test them.

Wow! I just can't find the words!
Regards,
Jim

I saw on the Food Network channel about an old time restaurant that deep fries hotdogs! They call them Rippers .......................OUCH LOL

I know someone who pissed on a cow fence once.

he lived, to be a very paranoid individual.

not if its submerged in the wet nasties that tend to accumulate in ditches, might still make some noise, but may be hard to see.

What a horrible way to go, but it sadly looks like his ticket was due to be punched.

My first experience with electricity and grounding, as I found out you don't necessarily have to piss on the wire, just the alfalfa touching it.

Mike

If you read close it said accident was at night..........how do you see a down line that is 3in in diamter in the dark?, in say a ditch or even in grass?, in a unfamiliar area?, after the stress of an accident and getting help? If its a busy road noise may not have been loud enough to hear or there wasnt any noise to be heard.
I hope the guy wasnt drunk, well actually I would have hoped it never happened at all.

I'm pretty sure it's not icy conditions. It's VERY mild this year, and Western Washington (below 1000 feet as in Montesano) has been pretty much frost-free since early December.

Well... the one I saw during the day, the light was bright, if not brighter than what several arc welders would produce. It had set the asphalt on the road on fire. I didn't think asphalt could catch on fire. It was noisy too.

I guess if the guy was drunk, in shock and incoherent... a number of things could've transpired.

I didn't know where it happened, but a southern boy like me would have assumed that it's icy all winter in Washington. Hell, there was ice on the road here a couple of weeks ago!

I agree. I saw that episode of Mythbusters. I assume it MIGHT be possible for a high enough current to jump the gaps in the urine strem, though. Even at that it would be a short duration shock. I guess if there's enough power to jump the gaps in the stream, that's all you need to kill you by stopping your heart.

Maybe he was one of the two guys in the old story who were peeing off the bridge, one says "Man, that water's cold." The other says, "yeah, and it's deep, too."
