Manual, Full auto, or just auto return your preference.

Semi auto for me then auto i fall asleep way too much for manual:boring:
Yup I just can't bring my self to a manual and be there every time the record's end, sometimes I get to walking around even sitting with headphones on looking at AK I don't get up right away. Semi auto for me. And I wonder if the sound would be that much better with manual?

My Pioneer Pl-520 is fully automatic, but I never use it in that mode. Maybe I'm strange, but there are few albums that have more than one song on them that I care to listen to, and those usually aren't the first track on the LP. I have dozens and dozens of albums I have never listened to all the way through in 45 years of owning them. It only takes me a few seconds of listening to form my opinion of whether or not the song is crap. However, when I do listen to something like Tubular Bells, it's nice to just be able to sit there and bask in the afterglow of the music once its done and let the auto-return do its thing.
I've got to get Tubular bells album others have said it's good.

Both of my tables are fully auto. Guess I prefer the convenience. I could live with a semi-auto or manual TT though.

Tubular Bells is great. I liked Oldfield's followups as well. Once I've kicked back and listened for 20 minutes, the last thing I want to do is get out of my chair and fiddle with my turntable, so auto-return rules.

My main table, Technics SL-D2, is semi. My backup table, JVC L-A31, is as well. They were what I came across while wanting to get back to records. Although my preference is a semi-auto, because my hands shake quite a bit, I certainly wouldn't walk away from a manual. I have a Technics SP-15 that needs new output leads. As soon as I can get it fixed, I plan on giving it try.

Come to think of it, I probably wouldn't walk away from a nice auto either.

there's a big chance I will doze off on the couch before the last side ends

Also my issue with the manual. One of these days if I ever get that thing into regular use, I'll add one of the tonearm lifters so at least it won't sit there playing the runout groove until I wake up. I have done that more than once.

Was using a great condition semi auto Sansui SR-212 but that's been replaced by a Technics SL-7 in even better condition.
Love the fully auto operation of it and it sounds really good too.

I've had a manual, a AR Legend with moving coil and I can truthfully say I think this Technics is as good, if not better.

I've always found automatic cuing mechanisms to be kind of inaccurate. I'd rather just put the arm where it is supposed to be. I do like auto return. My PS-X800 also has possibly one of best features I've seen: it mutes the output when arm is lifted! My Dual 1225 would lift at the end and then make a huge thump when it set the arm back down. It was so annoying. I don't know why more turntables don't incorporate this feature. It isn't necessary on manual table though.

Unfortunately my PS-X800 needs service and will neither reliably cue automatically nor manually. I can maybe get it work if I unplug it and plug it back in. Trying to save up the cash to send it out. I am also not crazy about having to ship a delicate piece of complex equipment across the border.

Manual in the main, living room system (Thorens TD-160). I had a full-auto Dual 1009 SK2 changer in the bed room, which was awesome, but it is having serious issues right now. I hope I can fix it, otherwise I need at least an auto-return, because I like to fall asleep to records.

The only problem is I have replaced the Dual with a CEC BD-2000, which has become my current favourite-sounding deck, but it is manual.

I like auto return. As long as it works like it’s designed to. I have a KD-2055 (one of my favs) that just slingshots the arm at the end of a record. I’ve tried tweeking and adjustments and can’t seem to get it smooth yet.

I have a yamaha YP-701 that i love and its auto return, which makes it easier. I have not used full manual or auto so I can;t speak for their sound or reliability but I vouch for auto return!

Nice turntable :) I have one too and love it! You do realise that the YP-701 is actually semi-auto and not just auto-return?

Before pressing play, lift and position the tonearm over the record where you would like to start playing and then press play. The platter will start turning and the tonearm will gently land on the record - there’s even an electronic circuit that temporarily disconnects the sound so there’s no loud pop as the stylus lands on the record.
