Marantz 1030 opinions

Hello chaps,

I was talking to my Dad the other day and one of his neighbours has a little 1030 up for sale. I seem to be attracting a lot of old vintage stuff at the moment!

I was wondering what the little 1030 was like, I mean in terms of build. I know the 1060 is almost identical with regard to its internals to my 2230, minus a tuner obviously. Does the 1030 share with another unit? What I would like to know is if if it cap coupled.

On another note what would be the period tuner and pre amp to use it with? Ones that are the same size and uniforms the 1030's looks?

This and the 1060 we sold quite a few of. If you can spring to a pair of Tannoy Devons or Eatons would be lovely. I would prefer the 1060 though.

It will sound pretty close in comparison to your 2230, yes cap coupled. If it is a very good price and working and you need a small system for another room go for it.

Well, I talked to the guy on the phone and struck up a deal. I going to pay £20 for it. And also he made mention of a pair of speakers he is going to throw in too. Don't know what they are, may just flip them. I have enough speakers at the moment.

Good score? I think so. I am happy anyway.

I'll go and collect them both tomorrow night and report back.

Just thinking out loud, it hasn't been used properly in some years. Shall I fire it up and check service adjustments before hooking up to speakers?

Now the problem is going to be able to get to the hardware store before picking up the 1030. Hmmm what to do...:scratch2:

I would buy it for that much if it was working or not. Especially if some speakers are thrown in.

For a matching tuner, do some research on the Legendary Audio Classics site. They have a list of all the marantz tuners and their specs, dimensions included.

A 1030 is a very nice little amplifier and if it's paired with efficient speakers it will have plenty of power.

A model 110 tuner is a good match for the 1030

I like my 1030. Its a nice little bedroom amp. Try to stay away from the 105 or 105b tuner that also match. I have a 105. Unless the radio station you listen to is just down the street it won't tune in much of anything.

Nice little headphone amp. good for taking to audition speakers. If it is an early model it will have the preamp out/power amp in on the back. Later models deleted this feature. There were also a number of different large cap options used in the amp. I have an early model with an unmatched pair of large caps for the power supply instead of one larger one. Interesting. changes in build as the availability of parts or cost or whatever changed how they were put together.

Well I picked the 1030 last night, I'm sorry to say it is a bit of a dirty state. It has been in a smoking home for the latter part of its life and is in need of a serious clean.

Sorry about the low quality pics, they were taken on my phone quickly. Can anyone tell me if its an early one or a later 1030. I notice it has the star on the front is that the later Philips era?

I'll pop up the pictures a bit later on of the speakers. They are KLH 300s don't know much about them...

Nope not during the phillips era, that was later on. A good sign , not much rust on the back, a couple of screws- should clean up nicely.

I think that the 1030 has the same amp as the 2215 receiver, both have cap coupled output stages.

Thanks for the replies chaps. I have bought all the parts to build the dbt, but I haven't assembled it all together yet. Unfortunately in the UK I haven't managed to find such a cute little bulb that fits into a socket. This has meant that my dim bulb tester will consist of a separate switch, socket and bulb holder.

I got rather impatient this evening and, please don't all shout at me at once, I did a very foolish thing next.

I put a new plug on the end of the lead and plugged it in.

The following is rather dull to say the least, the little 1030 worked. I hooked up a crappy pair of speakers and played some sound through it. A quick deoxit on the controls and I was away on all cylinders. :yes:

I am not proud of myself for doing this and typing the story I now realise how stupid it actually was to do it. I could have killed my 1030.... I am prepared to accept a bollocking from everyone. :nono:

I have checked the service adjustments, but I feel a longer run is required before I put the covers back on.

I know it isnt relevant to this forum but it is relevant to this 1030. I forgot to post the pictures of the KLH 300 speakers that came with the 1030. Here they are hooked up to my little rotel receiver.

I would guess that these speakers were what this little 1030 used to run.

They do require a re foam on the woofers but generally they are in good shape. I don't know much about these speakers and have never heard of KLH, but I think they are a little bit ****. The build of the cabinet is cheap and nasty and the terminals on the back look like they have been found in the 1950s parts bin.

I will give them a chance though and refoam the woofers and recap the crossovers and see what I have then. They may be ok enough to have in the workshop then.

I do have the grilles, they were just removed for inspection.

KLH speakers were Henry Kloss' first speaker company after leaving AR, he later went on to found Advent. The KLH speakers you have are NOT from KLH's glory days, but rather after they were sold to Singer (the sewing machine company) or maybe even later.
