Marantz 1040 & Grado SR80.

Hello,

I'm using an old Marantz 1040 with my Grado SR80 headphones. The sound is very musical and has good boogie factor.

I was told the main transformer inside the 1040 is what drives the headphones. Is this true?

The 1040 makes a good decent amp for my Grado's, and I'm happy with the combo.

Just out of curiosity, any other old Marantz amps that make very good headphone amps?

yea, the headphone out is driven from the same speaker outputs tied to the same power amp section but usually occupied by couple of dropping resistors to prevent overloading the headphone cause speakers need voltages and amps to run while headphones only need milliamps and millivolts, so yes it goes through the same power transformer that the speakers go through.

Bravo! That little guy looks good.

I use a Marantz 2226 on and off for headphones. It does a good job however I'm trying to sell a few things and upgrade to a t-amp.
 
I've liked it for a long time however I need to move on :D

I wouldn't pass up an amp like yours though. I've always wanted to try one of the classic integrateds.
 
Yes, the 1040 is a keeper, and it makes a good decent amp for my headphones.

Is their a particular Marantz amp that can drive any headphone? I know my 1040 can't drive all headphones to their best.

Not the main transformer, I think you're talking about the main amp.
If so the answer is yes. However there is a resistor in line with the
jack but its still being driven by the speaker output.
 
My Grado 125s go very nicely with my circa-1985 Yamaha A-1020 int amp. And I have a set of Grado 80s that I use with my Yamaha CR-620 receiver, also a nice match.

Your Yamaha CR-620 looks very nice. Is it from the 60s, 70s? And I take it, it has a good headphone jack.
 
It's circa 1978/9. It has not one but two good headphone jacks. I assume the idea was you and your friend/lover/partner/significant other/spouse could listen each on your own phones.

from my understanding there is no separate transformer for headphones cause it goes through the speaker outputs and the speaker outputs are fed from the the big main power transformer. i think you thinking of the little transformers you see in the amps also. think they mostly act as conductors and used to prevent interference from the tuner and from outside sources like cars,cfl bulbs and other electrical interference that can cause negative feedback to the acoustic signal.

I didn't say there was "any" transformer at the output.
The transformer is part of the supply which powers
everything including the main amp. The only thing between the
headphone jack and the speaker terminals are some power resistors.
If you look at the schematic it shows the jack connected to the speaker
switch, but its not connected that it will interrupt signal flow on any of the settings

alrighty then. i must of read your post wrong then so it's my fault on my part. i do apologize for my misreading.
