Marantz 1060 rebuild cap value question

I'm rebuilding a 1060 I picked up from a friend. Been reading a thread on a 1060 rebuild by another AKr that says he increased values of amp board caps but didn't list caps or or cap list. I've changed the main filter caps and upgraded them to 10Kuf 80V and 6800 uf 80V (coupling), I rebuilt the PS board with 1000uf/470uf/220uf. My main question for other people in the know here is whether I can go up to 100uf 63V on the amp board where 47uf 50V were used. Anybody have thoughts on this?

I wouldn't change component values without knowing what the effect may be, including the ones you upped in value. Others will vehemently disagree with me.
 
I mean you can...will it make a audible difference? Highly doubt it.
I read that someone else here had upped the PS P800 values 100%. I’m not attempting to change the sound by doubling the amp board’s 47uf to 100uf. I’m pretty sure those values ere thought out carefully, I just ran out of 47 uf caps.
 
I use 10KµF 50MM for the filter and 4700µF 35MM for the coupling caps, 105°C.
This was thought in advance as it is difficult to find a good quality 50MM 105° cap for the filter and by increasing the value of the output coupling capacitors it helps the bottom end, especially with low impedance speakers.
Back in the dark ages when these were built, electrolytic capacitor's 'capacitance' tolerance was +100% to -20%.

I got the 1060 up and running. I have a question for you Tom if you see this. On the preamp board the original caps, C403 and C404 polarity were reversed from what is printed on the board. I installed the new caps the same. Should I install the pair as marked on the board, or just use a film cap instead of the lytics? Also, C412 and C413 polarity is unmarked, again I installed the caps like the origins with the neg oriented toward the faceplate. I've seen poss from others who install these caps in a myriad of ways, some just like the originals, others replace C412 C413 with film caps, some just follow C403 C404 screen printed polarity and C412 C414 replaced with film caps.
Confused...but it sounds ok as it is
 
You could measure the dc voltage at both ends of the caps to see what the polarity is. Possibly having them in backwards could pull the voltages though. Often backwards caps will have a "fluttering" look on an oscilloscope at a low frequency and with no input signal can be audible or the woofers can be seen moving.
 
Very common for the CD to play a lot louder than phono. CDs are using a line level input designed to need a minimum of 150mV or so and receiving as much as 2000mV. The way to fix this is to use a variable output CDP. Some don't like that option with the extra components in line with the volume attenuator in the CDP but anything else would require a redesign of the amp, especially if the phono pre was to be increased in gain.
 
It’s just more noticeable on a low powered amp like this I guess. I can live with it as it is. Still wondering what advantages are had by replacing the preamps lyric caps with expensive WIMA film caps?
 
Film caps are better in many ways. Low noise low leakage and sound quality. Not all lytics need to be film some board caps are for power.
 
OK, so its back to the audio dark arts drawing board to get the values of the preamp film caps...stand by...
 
Did you replace the 2SC458 and 2SC1000 transistors on the Phono preamp board? (P900).

2SC458->KSC1845
2SC100->KSC1815

Made a noticable difference, along with replacing the caps. Seemed cleaner sounding, slightly more powerful than before.

I think a CD player in the 'AUX' will still be louder.

I'm aware of the higher output of CD players compared to RIAA inputs on vintage amps, but this one was pretty radical imho. I installed the film caps that Catrafter showed in his photo of the preamp P400 board and it made a change for the better over the lytic caps I installed earlier. I'm going to revisit the phono board and replace the transistors that fail with new KSA1845 and add the recommended film caps to see it it improves. Slowly making progress into turning this 1060 into a real rip snorter.
