Marantz 1120 Pilot Lamp

Hey Guys,

Thought I was going to finish the 4270 with the filter caps that came today, but they were too tall, so I had to go a different route and they should be here next week. I also got an 1120 which came today. Unfortunately it was not packed well and came with a red tag from the post office 'received damaged in Phoenix. The faceplate was pretty bad and it passed the DBT, but had no output. Even though it was pretty bent, I decided to take a look see and found the power supply pins were no longer inserted in the front panel PC and the pins were bent in all directions. I straightened the pins and got it back together and still nothing. Found a ground wire that was off and when I connected it, I had sound, but no pilot light. I tried using my DMM and it reads like 32v at the light, is this correct and where do I find a replacement bulb? Pics below...

one other question, the relay in this unit is exposed (no plastic cover), is that correct, and is there a replacement relay available? Thanks Rich

The original relay is open. My parts list is in this thread http://audiokarma.org/forums/index.php?threads/marantz-model-1120-differential-pair.725707/ The relay I used is listed. You need to move some wires inside the relay to make it work. I got the lamp from dgwojo. Your voltage is correct as I recall.

I love my 1120s they sound great. They are very easy to work on . Have fun with it. Did you fix the faceplate or are the third and forth pictures before shipping?

That's the faceplate after I banged on it with a hammer and wood, ok but definitely not perfect (it was perfect before it shipped). It was dropped so hard the corner of the amp pushed out on the faceplate, so it wasn't just bent. I am thinking of recapping the power supply and power amp, I know about the power supply because all the pins were out and bent when it got here (kinda scared to mess with it now it's working), but is the power amp easy to access. I've let it play for a couple hours and it seems pretty good, like some of the construction features and some of the others, not so much (interconnections between boards). Thank You and Merry Christmas to you and yours. The faceplate looks good in the pictures. I found the amp pretty easy to work on. All the wire are plugin if I recall. I used a few jumpers and tested the amp before mounting it back in the chassis. I would recommend doing the selector board while the amp is out as it makes it easer to remove.

Best of luck. The amp is the hardest board to work on, but its not bad. I looked at this thread as well http://audiokarma.org/forums/index.php?threads/model-1120-full-rebuild-upgrade.620643/#post-8207301 . hirscwi shared some notes with me. I will ask if its OK to share them here.

Hey Tony, Got the pilot light, power supply board and the filter caps done. Looks like you have to un-solder the outputs to pull the amp board, probably gonna wait on this one when I have more time. Thanks for your help so far! Rich

Well, I decided to go ahead and do the amp board, I have never removed outputs, so a little nervous. Pulled the board and un-soldered the outputs, re-capped the power amp with your list and put it back together. Trying to line up all 4 outputs and their respective spacers was a challenge for me, I am sure the real techs have a simple way, I just taped the outputs to the heat sink and laid the board on top and got a couple screws started. From there, it was just aligning and tightening down. Soldered everything back in place and re-connected the wiring. DBT .... pass, set it up, letting it burn in now ... sounds pretty nice .... Good going! I have four or five 1120s now. I really like the sound of the two I have redone. I still need knobs and a power button for one of them. Enjoy the music.
