Marantz 170DC Problems...

Hey guys,

Just finished installing new capacitors and output transistors on a Marantz 170DC I have.
This has been my most significant project yet, so when I hooked it up to my current limiter and the bulb went dim - I was quite relieved.

*However, I did notice that the relay took a while to click in.

*I repeated the on/off process and the relay would vary in timing of clicking.

*No sound from the right channel either, only a loud hissing from the left channel (with the gain turned all the way down).

I proceeded to check the transistors on the relay board, and they are still good.

*Another curious thing is when I went to check the DC offset. My readings would start somewhere in the 1.50mV range then slowly travel backwards into the -. Any tips? Something I'm doing wrong?

It's also worth noting that I had to replace a few burned resistors in the right amp board. Perhaps a few other components may have been effected from that mishap whenever it took place (I did replace the main transistors on the board). Added a before pic of the old transistors for fun.

We're any of these issues present before your recap?
It wasn't really feasible at the time. The entire right side had been dismantled by another user years ago, it seemed.

Funny though they left the bag of bad output transistors inside the amp for some reason?

My best judgement was to rebuild as best as possible and see what my results were.

*I did take a second look at the right amp board just last night and found/replaced several shorted diodes and one shorted pnp transistor.
 
One thing I came to realize, is the trim pots on either of the boards.

I believe this is how you adjust idle current?

In any case - I attemped to clean them/move them around a bit. After turning them back and forth then back to their original position, the relay refuses to kick in.

Could they be bad trim pots?
 
I've got it!

She sounds so beautiful.

The culprit was the pcb tracking on the backside. Essentially an interrupted circuit.

I mended it with quick point to point wiring.

I learned to pay close attention to the backside of the boards. Attention to detail!
