Marantz 2020 Layla CD problem

A neighbor asked me to fix her Marantz Layla amp/tuner/cd player - the CD player is skipping a lot. I took it apart and checked the laser mechanism - seemed to be moving smoothly but I lubricated it, cleaned the laser and it's still skipping - sometimes it will play for a few seconds before skip and sometimes 30-60 seconds. I put it into service mode and ran some tests with no errors. It has seen quite a bit of use so from the research I have done it's probably a weak laser, but then I don't have any experience with CD players so asking here.

Can I just replace the laser module, or should I get the whole mechanism? Are there any reliable sources? The service manual shows the "CD unit #" is CD94V5B1.

Are you possibly talking about the weird "MR-2020" model, that's the only one I can think of with a CD player built in.
and no, I don't remember ever seeing anyone work on one before (if that's the unit, MR-2020)
 
Yeah - that's it - MR-2020...I told her it was not really worth it to fix - just buy an external CD player as they are so cheap and use an RCA switch for multiple devices. But she wants to know if it is possible to fix and how much.
 
Hmm. I have one in a box somewhere but I have to agree - if a normal cleaning\adjustment (I haven't seen a service manual) doesn't fix it, then it's probably not worth opening up.
