Marantz 2215 silver, yet engraved..

Hi all...a question to any Marantz experts here. I just obtained a 2215, and it is definitely has the engraved faceplate, but its silver, definitely not the usual Champagne color. I have other Champagne ones that I was able to compare this to. The serial number is 5147, and my question is...were ALL the 2215's engraved and in silver, or, perhaps earlier serial numbers than this one were engraved and the normal Champagne color?

Yes there were 2215 receivers made with engraved faceplates.
Unofficial folklore has that the first 5000 or so of the 2215,2230,2245 and 2270 units were engraved.
Some say that the Marantz serial numbering starts with "1000" or "1001" thus allowing for the production sequence to end near s/n "6000".
This is probably correct as I don't remember anyone having one with a s/n below "1000".

Supposedly the cost of engraving was too expensive for the bean counters so they switched to silkscreen printing for the remaining production.

One lesser known story goes that those early units had underrated voltage caps from the factory and many came under a factory service bulletin to address it.

As far as "gold"" or "silver" engraved faceplates go there does seem to be both kinds out there.
Some claim the "gold" ones are just nicotine stained or just age patina but I've seen the "gold" ones cleaned up and polished and they do look great!

Thanks Bob for the info! This is my first silver one, all the other ones I have seen or owned have been that "gold" hue.

I just posted a very similar thread regarding the engraved modes for the 2270. To answer your question there were 4,000 made (not 5,000) for the 2270 starting with 1001, ending at 5,000. From what i have seen for sale (e-bay) is the champagne finish is more common than the silver. I own both and have only seen 3 silver engraved 2270's over the past 6 years. How more rare, that is my question. So i am trying to assemble a data base to answer that question for the 2270 only since there are probably more survivors than the smaller units due to their value. I would guess the other models had the same production pattern (more champagne faceplates than silver) as the 2270.
 
I currently have a 2230 serial no. 6614 (1972), and it has a screen printed face plate, but has a gold anodized chassis (rather than silver chassis) ... like many gold chassis I've seen with engraved face plates on early 2270's (have an engraved face plate 2270 now)

A number of years ago, maybe 15 ?, I had what I thought was a 2270 prototype. It had the engraved face plate, and other differences inside, not seen on later 2270's. I don't recall what they all were, but one thing was a multi voltage bank along the back, plus other things.
Just too long ago, and too many others in between to remember.

The biggest thing that made me think it was a very early prototype, was it had a serial number plate on the back panel, but no actual serial numbers at all. Only Marantz I ever saw like it of any model. (had 100's of Marantz units over the years)

At that point in time I was buying/selling/servicing Marantz receivers about as fast as I could turn them over. Engraved face plate receivers were not so "collectible" then...had a bunch of them. Usually had maybe 5-10 2270's constantly, so sold it to someone in Minn. as I recall.
...big mistake as it turns out now.
