Seeking guidance and direction from those who've dealt with this issue. I have an old Marantz 2216B that's been my garage stereo amplifier for years. I've recently cleaned it up cosmetically, swapped all the lamps with LED replacements, and cleaned all the pots, selectors, and push-buttons to remove the static with adjustments. I am experiencing an intermittent distortion problem. Sometimes audio will be clear as a bell, other times it will start clear and after a 20-30 minutes begin to distort (mostly noticeable on the right channel because of the base), and sometimes it will have the distortion at first turn on. The distortion is consistent with speakers connected to both sets A and B whether one or both sets are turned on. I have checked the headphone output, and there is no distortion there when the main speakers are distorting sound. They still sound clear as a bell.
I've read a lot of similar posts, but the ones I stumbled upon said their headphone sound was distorted too. I'm hoping someone on here can point me in the right direction as to the culprit for this. Would love to get this old amp back up and running like it used to. I have some electronics experience, but don't have a ton of analysis equipment at my disposal aside from a DMM and soldering station.
