Marantz 2220b and 2225 share the same boards

Hi,

I just finished recapping a 2220b and was shifting to a 2225. I am looking at the service manuals and nearly every board is identical.
I am comparing the caps and transistors for the main driver, eq, tone amp, etc and they are exactly the same
(the 2225 adds a mic amp to the toner board, but otherwise the same).
Same power supply board, supply caps and AC-coupling caps.
The 2225 delivers 5 more watts/channel using the same main amp boards as the 2220b by getting a bit more supply voltage (+/- 31V vs +/- 30V for the 2220b)
Same power supplies, so the transformer secondary must be outputting slightly higher AC for the 2225.

Anyway, these 2 models should sound very (very) similar based on the boards they share.

Or am I missing something...?

You are not missing a thing. The only difference is the amp board and the extra tuning meter. Pretty much identical. You can literally drop a 2225 amp in a 2220b and turn it into a 2225.

The transformer outputs the same and so does the power supply. The 2225 has a little more punch.

The 2225 has always been my favorite Marantz but the 2220b is a close second.

I've had a 2220B kicking around my place for a while now, rebuild stalled-out when I discovered the amp board did not match the service manual at all, and I mean absolutely not at all. Shrugged and put it up on the shelf to age and mellow for a bit, until finally last night the light bulb in my head turned on and I compared the number on the board to the number in the manual - didn't match, so I googled it. Wouldn't you know it, it's a 2225 amp board! Never would've guessed it, but I guess that's what AK and google are for

I am now looking at recapping a 2010 and 2015. While the 2010 is physically smaller (difference boards required, etc), these are nearly identical electrically.
The only differences I see :
1) 2015 uses two 3.3uF caps on the phono amp input while the 2010 uses two 2.2uF caps
2) Amp supply cap is 3300uF for the 2015 and 3000uF for the 2010
3) Transformer AC output for amp supply results in 50V for 2015 and 43.5V for the 2010

All other circuits are identical.
The 15WPC vs 10WPC are purely due to the transformer winding difference delivering unique supply levels to the identical amplifiers.

It makes perfect sense to leverage across products in the same family from design/manufacture/test/maintenance viewpoints.
Marantz certainly embraced this philosophy for the 2015 and 2010. Makes ordering parts easier for me :-)

At one time I owned and recapped both a 2225 and 2230b. Amazingly they were absolutely identical inside even down to individual component level.

I read somewhere the 2225 was only marketed for one year, subsequently becoming the 2230b with no changes
