Marantz 2220b rust bucket needs some FM, tuner help

Hey Guys, Decided to put the 1150 on hold and found a 2220b that looked good on the outside, but..... the inside has had a rough time with moisture and rust. It arrived in ok shape and only suffered a broken speaker terminal in shipping. I replaced the speaker terminal and powered it up on a dbt. Seemed ok, but no sound from the FM, switched to AM and got radio signal. Connected an external tuner and the unit actually plays fine. Since the 2220b has the boards exposed on the underside, I decided to just start recapping with what I had available. I recapped the power supply and the two FM boards (not the actual tuner). The boards in the center where the rust was concentrated had a total of six caps that the legs just fell off, so I am guessing they were not doing anything. After replacing all the caps that I had, I now have FM, but cannot get stereo and the sound is about 50% of the volume of the external tuner, also the signal strength meter does seem to move, but not really function. I know that this is probably beyond my abilities, remember I pretty much have a meter and a soldering iron, but I am hoping one of you miracle workers might have a suggestion that turns out to be an easy fix. Looking at the viewed counter, I see that so far 50 people have been awed into silence with this one. Wow! It looks like a large Coke was poured inside and then left to do its work. With six caps having their legs corroded away, I wonder about the remaining components on the IF and MPX boards being in equally poor condition. I'm impressed you have it working at all! The 'easy fix' may be a swap of the IF board.

Actually, I found some nice looking boards on the auction site and since I have been a customer in the past, he gave me a discount. I am awaiting both the boards that suffered the most damage and hoping that brings this one back. Once I get the new boards, I am going to try to sand away the rust and make it look halfway presentable. Wish me luck, I need it on this one. Thanks Rich

Being a model that is sparsely populated, it would be fun to remove everything, sand it and get it powder coated. Maybe go crazy and have it powder coated a bright color like red or blue. It would make a great conversation piece.

So, I bought a P-200 and P-300 board to replace the worst section of this unit, I changed out P-200 and powered it up and now have great FM, stereo indication and meter deflection. Since changing out P-200 was kind of a pain (the wires kept breaking), I left it at that. Changed the dial/meter lights, replaced the pointer light and sanded the rust from the cover. The bottom was too rusted, so I sanded and then painted it black. It is not a bad unit now as long as you don't look inside!





I know, the warm white LED's don't look so good (the meter has a cool blue LED), I prefer cool white or cool blue, but except for the P-200 board, this was done with what I had already. In total, recapped the phono, power supply, power amp and both tuner boards, replace all the lamps, replaced one speaker terminal and tried to clean it up as best as I could without taking it totally apart. I happen to have the correct filter caps, but haven't decided if I want to change them out. Thanks, Rich
