Hey all. I currently own a Marantz 2220b receiver and am considering purchasing a Sansui 5000x. Is this a good step up or should I just stick with the Marantz? I know they’re pretty different as far their wpc are concerned. I’m honestly not really sure I need the extra power. The room my stereo is in is pretty large, but I’m never really playing at super high volumes. Anyone with experience on these receivers want to help a brother out?

I know I posted pretty much the same thing in another thread. Guess I’m just looking for someone to give me the push to go for the Sansui.

I have a Sansui 4000 and a Marantz 2245. Both have been re-capped, problem transistors replaced, outputs re-mica'd and new thermal grease applied. I give the 4000 a slight edge in sound compared to the 2245. Slight. A little more detail with still sounding warm somehow. Still, I wouldn't sell my Marantz, either.
If you purchase the Sansui at a decent price, and after a while you decide you like the Marantz better, you could sell the Sansui at what you paid for it.

I had a 5000a, nice smooth and full sound at lower volume and they are really fun cranked. You will need to plan on refurbishing it unless you pick one up already restored. If you have the extra money and don't overpay its worth trying because you could sell it real easy. The only way you will ever know what sound you like is to start rotating some gear through so you have some reference points. I preferred my 5000a to my 2240 but both were swapped out years ago to fund new gear purchases. I wouldn't hesitate to pick up another of either if a deal comes along because they both are still increasing in value.

I think it’s a difficult comparison seeing how each of those receivers need completely different speakers to sound their best. I’ve had early Pioneer mid surround sound speakers on a 2220b that were allot more revealing than a pair of HPM-100b. Where the 5000x doesn’t need low watt sensitive speakers.
