Marantz 2226B Oscillation(?) and Bleed Over

Hi there. I'm another guy that just bought a 2226B to get addicted to. It came from a Goodwill and is pretty much spotless on the outside and, after a lot of reading, has some typical mono stick crackle and balance issues that deOxit will hopefully handle.

The problem I can't clean away, which may be something I am doing, is that when running my AT-LP-120 into the 2226B my entire desk starts to rattle. To test I figured out I could cause this by just putting the needle down. This occurs in phono and AUX input (using line for aux). This does not happen when plugged into Tape 2 using line output on turntable. It is more pronounced with actual track is playing and progressively gets worse.

I also get a faint bleed over from phono and aux into every other input. Any ideas?

I think what is going on is acoustic feedback. The idea is the bass from the speakers sitting right there couple into the needle, get amplified, come out of the speakers again and get even louder. You'd have to move either the turntable or the speakers to fix that. A test to do is to turn the speakers off and listen to the TT through headphones. If the issue goes away that confirms the feedback as being the issue.

I was like a mad scientist and kept thinking about feedback but just didn't understand that it was getting back in the loop by coupling through the needle.

I only had it that close until I tear into it but I was digging it.
