Marantz 2230 - $550

I think someone here in Des Moines is thinning their Marantz collection. I bet they are keeping their 2385, 4400 and 500\3600 combo (but maybe not if they are selling the 150 tuner?). Puzzling! The pictures from the diff ads are all similar but with different tables? Hmmmm.
So, my 2230 with 80% refurb (no tuner work) should sell for maybe $800 or more? LOL, man.
This one at $550, it's nice a clean.

IMO, it would have to be a fully restored museum piece at that price. Every e-cap replaced and a tuner alignment. With measured performance curves. With a warranty.

Looks like a very nice 2230. I have done a lot of research on Marantz here in the Northeast. All of my system except the speakers are Marantz. I looked for a long time on EPray, FB Maretplace and CL. I can say that even with the so called Marantz tax that 8 hundred bucks is high for that unit. Sorry dude.

Based on that 550, yes, yours would be an 800 buck unit. Marantz, why? so much other great gear for way less. Fortunately, most don't know any names except Pioneer and Marantz.

So I guess I have to prove my point. Here is a 2230 that has been gone over by a pro. Has a box and work perfect. Asking 400 bucks.

I can show more ads of different Marantz units that are better then the 2230 that are less than 800 bucks on FB marketplace here in the Northest.

Here is a 2245 for 350 bucks. All gone threw and works good. I can go on. I hate to do this to have to prove my point. I bought my Marantz 1090 for 200 bucks. I did put some work into it but they they are so rare I had to get what I could as t the time.

That 2245 is a good deal and won't last. The 2230 is "professionally redone," but who knows what that means? I always laugh when people talk about how their gear was rebuilt, or serviced, or redone, or restored, or whatever, but don't explain what that means and don't have any interior pictures. "Serviced" usually means they replaced a few lights and lubed the controls. God only knows what "professionally redone" means.

Most of the popular mainstream vintage that we all like seems fairly rare on CL in Iowa. When they do come up, the prices seem to be quite high compared to other markets.
I do lay part of the blame on a particular individual here who, for YEARS has adverts up nearly 100% of the time (95%?) with highly priced, pristine units. I think along with people who see prices on ebay, without filtering for SOLD prices - this skews the market.

It's like a self-fulfilling prophecy - the more $ people ask, the more people see the high $ price. Then they all want top dollar.

We don't know what CL items sell at - so I'm not sure what happens in the end. Sold or not? If sold, high price or low? We don't know.

Dingman. Very good post. There is a lot of truth in your post in my opinion. Its economics 101. Value is set not buy the seller or manufacturer but by the buyer. Its always bin that way. A person will put out an item for sale at a high price and wait to see if it sells. If it does not they lower the price until it does. Manufacturers do the same thing by putting their products on sale when they don't sell. In this way values are set. I think some sellers do their homework first or have been selling for a while and know where the values are. They don't want to wait to sell so they set the price at a good number to sell quickly. This is just my thoughts and do not reflect the opinions of the station or the public.
