Marantz 2230 rescue

Today I was offered a 2230 from someone I had done some repair work for. He picked up a 2230 from a closed repair shop and it had a channel out, so he sold it to me for $100. This is a really early one, but not champagne engraved—the serial is 64XX.

The issues:
Wrong bottom cover jammed on—it’s from a home theater receiver or something
No feet
Left faceplate corner bent/scrapes
Some minor chassis bends on bottom
Missing fuse/fuse cap
Left channel hums, smokes a little

So far I have found two shorted outputs and one open emitter resistor on the left. I’ll update once I have more info. Receiver appears to be completely original (other than a few lights) otherwise.

You are in luck on the faceplate. @Aaron99 is gearing up to sell really nice quality repro faceplates for many units. I believe he is already selling 2230 faceplates at vintagehifiaudio.com. I have one of his 2245 plates and it is the best reproduction plate I have seen. It has the correct thickness, the correct brushed front face, and UV printed lettering that looks exactly like the original. I did a full restore on serial # 1309 a while back. It had been hacked badly by someone who didn't know what they were doing. Took some doing, but it eventually sounded fantastic. Personally, I find the basket cases the most fun to bring back to life. Good luck with yours!

Both drivers are bad too. R769 is smoked—couldn’t see it until I pulled the driver and its heat-sink. One pre-driver shorted.

Amp is working now. All new caps and transistors, plus trimmers, emitters, and glass bead diodes replaced.

Power supply rebuilt too. Phono board was next. Someone had replaced the 2SC458s with 2SC1775s. Redid the usual stuff and I’m on the preamp board right now.

Redid the preamp board with the usual new caps and transistors. the phono and preamp boards both had big green .47 uf film caps on them—I replaced those with new MPT film caps. I also upgraded the .22 uf green preamp caps to .33 uf MPT caps.

Redid the right amp board and swapped out the drivers and outputs there so it will match the other amp board. Replaced the three main caps with new CDE 6800 uf 80v caps. The stereo lights turned out to be non-original 8v bi-pins so I redid those with the proper 6.3v 40ma bi-pins. I still have the tuner boards and the bridge rectifier to replace, plus the dial lights.
