Marantz 2230 Weak Output until over 50%

I recently obtained a Marantz 2230. It's my first Marantz. I've noticed, what I think is, odd behavior when adjusting the volume. The increase in volume in the first 50% of the knob movement is slow. At 50% the volume is at what I would consider a comfortable listening volume (speakers are Nova 7B, seating is about 6 feet away). After that the volume increases exponentially faster. At about 3 o'clock its nice and loud, with no noticeable clipping. I haven't tried running it past that.

Is that normal?

Is this on FM, phono, AUX, tape?

The 2230 is not a powerhouse by any stretch of the imagination so if your input is from say a phone streaming or similar it's going to take some volume to get the sound pressure up and that's pretty far into the volume control.

Has the volume and other controls been cleaned, unit updated?

Had many 2230's over they years and they sound lovely but they are underpowered at times unless you have super efficient speakers.

AUX input, with a phone. That was a solid inference.

I've cleaned the switches, but I haven't updated any parts (it's original, as far as I can tell).

I know my Nova's are not the most efficient and have been keeping an eye out for a deal on something more suitable. But matching speakers to your amp, and music taste, on a shoestring is an adventure.

What speakers do you run?

I have run many different speakers with 2230's over the years. JBL's and Brauns/ADS do well as do Dynaco A-25's.

Sweet combination to my ears are Klipsch Heresey and the 2230.

Have you hooked up a CD player to the tape input? That will get you more volume. Your Nova speakers are solid well regarded vintage speakers.

Turntable available to hook up to the 2230?
