Marantz 2230

First off, I don"t even pretend to be a tech, I buy things, expect them to work, if they don't, I rely on knowledgeable people to fix them...
I bought a Marantz 2230 from an estate sale in September 2016, lately Ive been noticing a low hum when I power on the receiver...it does not increase or decrease with the volume control, I have unhooked my turntable power rca's and ground to make sure that wasn't the issue...it still hums....

I have a Nikko receiver that does what you are describing. When I lift the left side of the cabinet from underneath, the hum goes away. I've been keeping a small block of wood under the left side until I can investigate further.

Is the hum from the SPEAKERS or from the AMP CHASSIS?

I have a Kenwood power amp that hums from the chassis. You can hear it even if no speakers are hooked up.

there be a lot of local filter caps in the 2230, plus the power supply has caps that are REAL close to their max voltage as installed. if the machine has not been updated in at least that area, its time. they aged, they leak, they ripple. You would to if you are old.

Plus I am learning the hard way that the older non-B units are ground loop nightmares.

Lastly, make sure there are no other noise generating things near it. I found that my soldering pencil , cell phone etc introduced noise when near the unit.

I would be looking into a recap restoration and would stop using it. It will sound better afterwards.

The Marantz section at AK has lots of information on how to restore this receiver. If you can’t do it yourself there are several there that can.

Transformer may be vibrating the chassis.
