Marantz 2230B headphone jack

I bought a Marantz 2230B several months ago as my first real stereo system purchase. I've been very happy with it.

The other day I decided to plug in some headphones for the first time. I got a 1/4" male/3.5mm female adapter and plugged my headphones in.

The sound only really comes in the left headphone speaker - it's heard very faintly in the right speaker, but I have to adjust the balance almost all the way over to the right side for it to be equal, and then I have to adjust the volume to compensate, of course. It's not a big deal, but it's an annoyance. I was wondering what could be causing this - is it something fixable, or is it a problem with some circuitry (with this being a nearly-40-year-old piece of equipment, I suppose that's very likely)?

That is good advice - I definitely should give this device a good cleaning. I know the potentiometer for the volume knob needs to be cleaned, I can hear it when I adjust the knob.

That being said, I figured out what my issue is anyway - the headphone jack was actually installed by myself when I go the stereo, because the original jack was falling apart - so I know the jack won't be dirty. That being said, I must have crossed or mixed up one of the three wires when soldering it all together, so I'll have to take it apart and check it out.
