Marantz 2235 Speaker Recommendations

A Marantz 2235 receiver and a 6350 turntable recently found their way into my household.

I currently have some Def Tech promonitor 1000's and an SVS PB-1000 Sub and have been running the turntable through my Onkyo TX-NR808 which has a phono preamp.

Got two cartridges for it - Ortofon 2M Red, and a Sumiko Pearl. It also came with a Pickering TL-3. So far, I like the Pearl most with my current setup.

I'd rather start using the 2235 but found that going through the Def Techs with or without the sub, the mids are kind of lost even after boosting with the 2235 EQ. Thinking I'd rather just invest in a good sounding pair of speakers just for listening to music. Kind of a larger room (3100+ cubic feet) but getting pushback on floorstanders from certain insensitive family members...

Any speakers you all think would pair well? I'm open to new stuff - doesn't have to be of the same era as the TT and receiver per se. Guessing they'll need relatively high sensitivity, right?

Budget is pretty open at this point. I think...

I have Ohm Walsh 1000s on my 2235b and really like them. I have a fairly small listening space and the Ohms fill it very well. About 7 inches off the wall and they have plenty bass for me. They also have a ton of veneer options. The new KLH model 5s look cool but have not heard them.

A buddy of mine also recommended Ohms. Forget what model he liked. I guess Ohms can be hard to find but I'll be on the lookout. I'll check out the KLH also. Thanks!

Whoops. Just saw they are making new Ohm Walsh speakers. I had no idea, thought they were vintage only. Cool!
 
So floor-standing speakers are out? Won't small format speaker have about the same footprint once placed on stands?

What will your listening distance be? In a large room, you will get less room reinforcement, so you are probably right about seeking speakers of relatively high sensitivity, unless you plan to listen near-field and only at lower SPLs.

Maybe this will help? Here's the room (I know, the room ain't great for acoustics but it's what I've got):

  • The orange is the primary listening area.
  • The red are where the Def Tech Promonitor 1000's are now and the preferred location (on top of an entertainment cabinet- no stands)
  • The brown is the subwoofer
  • The blue is potential workable location (on a fireplace mantle) for bookshelves
  • The green is where maybe I could put floorstanders and not incur the wrath of my family but least ideal option
  • Ceiling height is 10'

Also to clarify- doesn't have to be audio perfection- I've come to the conclusion in this room I'll never get that without blocking all the exits and covering the walls in foam. As I might like to do that I have given my oath that I will not "go crazy with audio stuff in the living room". "Sounds quite good" is the target....
 
They’re floorstanders, but the Marantz HD-880’s and the 2325 have a great “synergy” and sound great together! Both from the same era, the speakers were designed by former JBL Chief Engineer Ed May.
 
If at all possible, I would avoid using the fireplace mantle for your speakers. Too high to get good imaging and soundstage. Okay for ambient sound, not good for high quality performance. Ideally, you would want the tweeters at or close to ear level (when seated, unless you listen standing up!).

Yeah- understood and you're 100% spot on. That said, I partially plan on listening while standing- mostly during those moments when I'm walking from the living room to the bourbon cabinet and back.

I really don't love the Definitive Technology Promonitor 1000's with my setup for whatever reason- trebly and fatigue-y. They look good, but that's about it. Might just get some of the ubiquitously reviewed Elac DBR62's or something as a stop gap. Then at least my ears won't bleed between now and when I find something vintage somewhere like those HD-880's that really pairs well with the Marantz 2235.
