Marantz 2235b - should I just part it out?

So I picked up a Marantz 2235b off craigslist for $70. The guy I got it from said that he found it in his mom's basement and had no clue about it, didn't even know what a Marantz was. It powered on but didn't put out sound, so I figured I'd roll the dice and pick it up, take it to a shop, and hopefully get it repaired. Worst case scenario I could sell it non-functional and probably still end up positive.

The shop called with a $580 estimate. Here's the picture of the diagnostic the shop gave me. It powers on, most of the lamps are good. The phono pre-amp works, and all inputs also work. The condition is fair, the faceplate has some small dings on the edges, the cover has some noticeable scratches. It's dirty, but I am going to clean it up.

My question is, would it be worth more parting it out, or in its current non-functional state?

That's kind of what I was wondering about. I can't find too many examples of people selling the parts on ebay so I was wondering if the fine folks here on AK could kind of give me a general idea on how much it would be worth parting it out vs. its worth as-is

I think that yes more money could be had if parted out but it will take time it may be a few years before you sell it all

Aah yeah I guess I'm just not really sure how much of a demand there is for parts on these receivers, or if people tend to prefer the non-functional unit as-is
 
Plenty of demand for both parts and the receiver it would likely sell for $200.00 as is on BT the knobs will bring 20.00 each the switch covers will sell for 10.00 each the face plate if nice would sell for 50.00 the feet 10.00 each the antenna 30.00 and so on
 
I had to part out a Sansui G-8000 because one channel was burnt up and the previous owner disassembled everything. It took about six months to sell most of the pieces, and I still have a few items left. Knobs were the first to go, so your Marantz knobs should sell fast. Feet as mentioned, and the case also. But you need to account for eBay fees, PayPal fees, and the shipping charges. Small items are easy to ship through USPS, but the bulkier the packaging is, the higher the dimensional weight calculation is. I was also flexible with pricing and let people make offer less than my asking, and that helps move things along. I see one guy that sell parts for about twice as much as what other's are asking, and his parts sit there for years. You will need to research on the approximate desirability of each part also. If they sell within an hour of listing, the price was too low or someone wanted it bad enough. For the parts that I removed , I always preserve every wire connector keeping in mind that if I were replacing the same part, I would like to have that wire connector or the special screw or small bracket that holds the part. There are sellers that just snips everything, and I would hate to work with that part. You should also indicate that a certain board is in working or non-working condition. I always describe it as to be used for a rebuilt as I don't know that it worked.

Thank you so much for the advice. I figured that the parts that are most in-demand would probably go faster. I've never parted anything out before, so I'm really not sure what it's like. Do you know of a good source to get an idea on how much the various boards are worth? Ebay doesn't seem to have much info, and I can't find too much on AK either

You will just have to scour the web for information from various sources. Sometimes Google searches will show eBay sold transactions that eBay itself doesn't have anymore. Read up on AK Marantz forum. Get a service manual, so that you can identify the board by name and number. Original output transistors are worth something, but you need to know how to perform a basic test. And if an item doesn't sell after 30 days, lower it by a few dollars , and repeat. I have lowered my asking prices for everything that remains, and they still sit. But then, don't lose track of your original goal, which was to recover your $70, plus a few coins. If you're able to net $150-175, the rest is icing on the cake.
 
It all depends too on the cosmetic condition of the appearance items(knobs, faceplate,etc.)
If they are less than perfect(scratched,dented) the value of those items drops severely.
Just for info , new Marantz feet can be had for way less than $10each.
Putting it here on bartertown would be far easier.

I don't know if that is worth $150 with that list of problems. If I listed it as a parts unit, I would include the list of things known to be wrong, and that list doesn't look good.

I dont know exactly what it would go for with that many issues. If its super clean cosmetically it will make a big difference. I would take 12 good photos, and explain that it was taken into a shop and here is what they found.. BIN-OBO starting at $150 and see what happens..
