Marantz 2238BL - occasional loud distortion / fuzz on treble control

Hi, can't find a specific post on this so thought I'd start one / ask...

I've got a Marantz 2238BL. Works great. No crackle on any controls but once in a while I get a loud fuzz/distortion, sometimes when I'm playing music (vinyl, mostly) but also when the unit is on but not being used.

It seems to be connected to the treble control, in so far as I can kill off the fuzz noise when I turn the treble control. The only other way to stop it is to power off.

This happens once in a while, but it's becoming more frequent. I've tried getting to the treble pot and cleaning it but that's made no difference (although I may not have cleaned it properly - it's hard to reach).

Any ideas? Suffice to say, I'm a real amateur when it comes to vintage hi-fi.

Here's a good tutorial if you haven't read it yet. Sometimes flipping the receiver upside down and taking off the bottom panel will give you better access to the pots. Sometimes I have to put a bend in the straw to get to a pot. Or fuse two together for extra length. A Yamaha CR 450 had small access holes on its pots, so I used a hospital grade syringe for a delivery method. It worked good. You have to be creative sometimes.
