Marantz 2245 as a pre?

Steelman

Super Member
I have been thinking of using my 2245 as a pre lately...

My current main rig consists of the following:

-Rotel RB-990BX
-AudioSource Model Pre One
-Panasonic DVD-RV32
-Technics SL-Q2
-Bose 901 Series VI (yea yea....I know! :D)

Don't get me wrong...the above sounds very nice. But, I find myself missing that warm, lush signature "Marantz" sound.

Any opinions as to the pros/cons of swapping the AudioSource with the 2245?

I have to admit...I miss the look of the marantz as well :D

Go ahead and try it out , the Marantz pre-amp IMHO is a good one on that model .

I recently picked up a 2245 at a thrift for 35 dollars. It's beautiful and sounds very good in my garage with my 2 pairs of KLH Model 23's. I have not tried it as a stand alone pre, but I would think it should sound very good paired with a good amp.
just do it.

I noticed my album dubs had a bit of the Marantz sound which I credit to the phono section. I'd go for it. I never did try the pre -out on mine as I was quite happy with the whole package.

...we will find tomorrow. My rig is in a closed back unit my girlfriend and I picked up...high WAF, PITA to swap gear out of :sigh:

I should say that I do remember using the pre-out for signal routing, but not to use another amp. My primary use of the Marantz was on my recording computer which is where I wanted "the sound".

Like I said before, I like the current rig's sound but I can't shake the "It sounds good but there is something missing" feeling...the only thing I can put my finger on is the Rotel/AudioSource combo replaced my 2275 and that signature "marantz" sound...

My bet is you will be pleasantly surprised.
I tried doing the same with a Pioneer SX-980 and a HK Citation 22 using some
test Bose 301 Series II. The combination sounded much better than I expected and the speakers stood right up and took more than I should have given them without a whimper.
Enjoy!

That's what I am hoping for :thmbsp:

The 2245 has a LED upgrade and is a real nice looking piece. I am going to order caps and restore this one to keep. I regret selling my 2275...will not be making the same mistake with the 2245.

I had a PS Audio 4.6 as my pre. Was really nice and dead quiet but it seemed to be missing something. Then I tried using my 2245 as a pre with my Raysonic tube amp. Sounds much better to me and I was really impressed with the sound. Warm, lush and the soundstage sounds deeper. Phono section is really nice too!
