Marantz 2245 voltage conversion mystery?!

Hi guys,
I'm about to finish the restauration of a nice Marantz 2245 and one of the last steps is driving me insane.
Here in France,domestic voltage use to be 220V and most of the vintage gears you'll find around are set on this.
But over the years, voltage has evolved to almost 240V.
So to make sure everything goes finer over the years, I switch all my machines to that voltage.

So I'm now facing a strange situation.
In 220V, the receiver works like a charm.
Once, switched to 240V, the relay doesn't clic and I can hear a low but growing hum from that area.
I've been looking around and I can't find any explanation for that.
Do you guys have any idea why this is happening?

Could that problem due to insufficient power diodes on the power supply?

I'll try to repond the best i can. I do it with a couple of questions.

1: Are you sure you've converted that 2245 the right way?

2: I seem to miss a couple of good pictures of that connectionboard (terminal block) where the transformer cables meet.

3: What is the parts number of that transformer ( usually stamped on the side of the trafo. ) it could also be nice to have the serial number of the unit...

I have 3 x 2245 here - and I am i Denmark. One of them i recently restored and converted from 220V to 240V without any problem.

So....good answers and good pictures please

Well I can think of two reasons for that;
1- running electronic setted on 220V with 240V provided will cause premature damage on the long run
2- Because I want to know what is wrong in this amp!

Hi Freddy,

Answering your questions, I've done the conversions as mentionned in the manual.
It's a pretty straight forward mod.
This is where the magic happens;

Modification is going from this;

To that;

As you can see, nothing complicated.
But when doing so, relay wont click.

I need to take pictures tonight when I get back home.
I'll post part number of the transformer and serial number of the unit.

This picture is not from my device but I have changed the relay ideed.
Now it has a brand new Omron relay.
This one precisely;

Could that be the issue?

Seems like a person could measure the secondary of the transformer while on 220 config, then swap to 240 config and check the voltages again, something must have changed.

Now, just because my english is a bit limited, by secondray, you mean voltage out of the transfo, right?

Yes, the transformer output voltages. I'm thinking we should see a change of voltage there, which is causing the trouble with the relay.
When we see what the difference is, that could help show us the solution.

So, here are some infos;

transfo number;

Serial number 52933

Now I'm willing to measure voltages before and after conversion, but to be honnest, I don't really know where to do that.

Should I try somwhere around here;

After doing the conversion again, it's very clear that relay doesn't get enough power to click.

It looks as if you did the wiring really ok....

this one is #57868

As I told, i have three 2245's here - and I just restored a very dirty and abused boy here. Please look at the pictures. It looks very much like yours in all aspects. My relay is the original one. I recapped the P800 as yours also has been.

When lookin at your 2245 I'd be suspicious about the powersupply-board (P800). It looks to me as it was done a bit like a "hack-job" - (no pun intented). something could have been mounted wrongly? - og maybe the relay is a wrong type.? - I'm definately not a relay-guy but I se this as a possibility.

If you still have the original relay and if it was "working" fairly ok - you could try to check if the unit works on 240V with that relay?
