Marantz 2245

Hello,

I got a line on a Marantz 2245 for 150. Looks to be in perfect condition and maintained by the owner who took great care of it. Everything works on it. Is $150 a good price?

Also, what would be a good Marantz CD player to match this receiver?

sounds like a fair price ... just so you know questions regarding price and what something is worth belongs in the dollars & sense catagory ..this will prolly get bumped by the mods , & welcome to AK

don't ignore the 2230

I just picked up 2 vintage Marantz recievers a 2245 and 2230. The 2230 is dark (needs bulbs) but it sounds incredible. The 2245 sounds great but at this point the 2230 has really captured my attention. Maybe after a good cleaning this will change.

Sometimes it takes few days before old gear run correctly. That's my experience. The first listening sessions are poor, but after two of three days it's better. That's why I prefer wait a while before a sonic evaluation. Maybe this delay is required after months or years of sleeping for some components like caps ?

paid 80.00 for a 2238 last month off of CL ,,, if it needs bulbs you could put invest another 10 to 20 bucks

Picked up my 2245 yesterday. Very impressed with the tuner. I'm picking up stations that I didn't know were there. Also sounds great. I'm currently listening thru headphones only(I have it set up next to my bed) but I think I may end up swapping it for the Yamaha Rx-777 that I have running a pair of Cambridge SoundWorks M80 bookshelfs in the living room.

I do have a question. I have an old pair of of AKG K240 headphones and a pair of Grado SR60's. When I listen to the AKG's they sound muddy and I need to turn up the volume to like 10:00 oclock to listen but when I plug in the SR60's it's painfull to listen at the same volume setting. Why such a big difference? Are the AKG's just really ineffiecient?

Not inefficient. The old generation of AKG 240 are 600 Ohms. I do not know for the gardo, but 50 Omhs are more often the value for a pair of headphones... That's why you have to turn the volume for the AKG. It's more a question of what pair you prefer. Could I ask ?

renaudagnes,

Thanks for the reply. I actually like the Grado SR60's a lot better than the AKG 240's. The 240's sound really dead or muffled. The Grado's just sound so open and clear but still give good base. I really like them but I think I'm going to try to find a pair of vintage Pioneer Monitor 10's. I need a closed pair so I can listen in bed without bothering the wife.

I have a 2230 in need of a bulb or two...

...so if you're looking for bulbs, PM DGWojo... They're easy to get to, and I have it on good authority that you should stick with the 200mA value fuse bulb. Apparently the 300mA ones can melt some of the plastic lighting parts....:thumbsdn:
