Marantz 2250 amplifier static on left channel, only at real low volume

Hey gang. Looking for some advice. Just purchased my first Marantz receiver. A nice 2250 in great shape. Only issue I have found is regardless of the input selected, when you turn the volume down way low, the left channel begins to get staticky and cutout/dropout intermittently. Turn the volume up and everything is fine.

Right channel is solid the whole time. Checked bias and offset voltages and they’re spot on. Swapped speaker leads, input leads and anything else I could and it remains. Took a small external amplifier I have and hooked it up to the preamp out. Problem gone. No static no drop out and all knobs rotated and wiggled are static free. So by reasonable deduction it would appear to me the issue in the amp. Any thoughts or suggestions? Have a multimeter, understand electronics and can read a schematic. Don’t have an oscilloscope (might be time to get one).

Thanks for any advice. This was a retirement present to myself along with a nice pair of Klipsch Forte IV’s. The combo sounds amazing, except for that left side issue. Thangs again.

Sometimes the relay will have dirty, pitted contacts that will cause your symptoms.
Take the cover off and try tapping on it when the symptoms are there. See if the signal returns.

Thanks Kwayde. I'll give that a shot tomorrow and report back.
 
Well I tried the easy one first. Removed jumpers and put RCA cables from pre out to amp in. Same thing. Interesting part came when I unplugged the rca cables completely from the in out plugs and the receiver continued to produce sound from both speakers. Obviously someone has gone in and jumperd those terminals internally OR there is something else going on between pre and amp. It might be a preamp issue. I’ll remove the jumper and do the diagnostic test again. So search for answers continues. Will look deeper later today. Thanks to everyone for the input so far.

Here’s a pic of the pre out and amp in terminals. Comments? Did not know they are internally jumped. Time to move on to the relay than. Taking preamp out to an external amplifier still solves the problem.

Follow-up to last post. This morning I flipped the 2250 receiver back over and took the top off, to access the relay. Fired everything up with a test tone input and all was fine. Started tapping lightly on the plastic relay cover and there it was. Random L and R channel static and dropouts. Just from light tapping. Think I found the culprit. Just going to replace it with a new one. Once I get it in I’ll report back.

It's nice when the problem can be found rather easily using suggestions like Eastpoint's and mine.

Hopefully anyone in the future with similar symptoms will do a search on it and save themselves some time.

Realized I never followed up on my marantz issue. Relay was it. Once it was replaced no more cutting out and crackling noise. Thanks again everyone for your help. Now it’s on to recapping my HK 930 receiver. _G
