Marantz 2250b noise with tone control selector switch

Hello all of you wonderful Marantz gurus!
I've got a frustrating little issue to ask about.
Firstly, this was my first (mostly) complete recap adventure. I started with some swollen caps on the power supply board, then after more reading here went ahead and recapped the tone control board hoping to get rid of some of the brightness of this 2250b (it sounds just about perfect to my ears with the loudness on, but just a little bit harsh without it)
Those recaps went smoothly although the sound didn't change that I could appreciate.
Then for practice, I recapped the two amp boards. Again, went smoothly. These are sweet pieces to work on!
(Still no change in the sound which is good sound, just a little bright to me. Not as warm as other Marantz I have.)

However, I have this annoying issue with the tone selector switch (it was present before and after the recap)
Whenever is switch from off to on and back off, I get a soft "bump", it's a bit of a pop sound, kind of a "puh" sound from the speakers. (Not terribly loud, but noticeable)

And it's only on the first jog to on or off, not when switching to the other settings.
(Now, let it be known that I cleaned the ever living snot out of this switch!
I have deoxited it, I have used electrical contact cleaner, I have used nuclear strength electrical contact cleaner, I have use DeOxit Gold, DeOxit Fader Lube, DeOxit 100. I have prayed, I have cussed, I have q-tipped, I have sanded the disc thingee that slides between those swiper thingees. I have attempted my Jedi mind trick and am at the point of sacrificing a Tauntaun....!)
It's as clean as it will ever be....
Now what?
Is there a bad diode, capacitor, transistor, resistor, thermistor or any other -or that can be causing this? Does it need an exorcism?
I'm at my wits end...

I have a 2285 with the same thing. This is a design "feature" by Marantz and there's nothing you can do but wait about a minute after turning on the receiver until you turn the tone switch. I resoldered, rebuilt, reworked and cleaned every bit of the switch and surrounding circuit with no improvement.

Here's the answer from my thread:
It takes a few minutes for the charge on some of the capacitors in the tone circuit to stabilize at power up. If you cycle the switch before then you will hear a 'pop'.

Can you point me to that post, I'd like to read up on the 2285. I have one of those in my collection waiting for some love too!

Not much to do today other than dwell on this, so decided to have even more fun and recap the phono board, and well... since I have all the equipment out, go ahead and have a go at those tantalums on the tone board also.
And...
And...
Poof, Popping sound gone!! Go figure...
Also, I got some of that sweet Marantz fullness back and he's not so damned bright sounding!
(This from the tone board, haven't gotten to the phono section yet)
And this from the tantalums that aren't supposed to go bad....
Just thought I'd share the good news!

Soooooo...... The saga continues....
Haven't played the 2250B for a while, while I've been working on other projects. Went back to him yesterday and the popping seems to be back
I'm hoping that cleaning the switch again will clear it up, but dang.....
(I'd like to sell this one on, but I just can't with this issue cropping up :-/
Any other ideas?
 
I was never a fan of the 2250b. It was very bright and I never quite got it to match well with my setup. Beautiful piece and otherwise great sounding, pops aside. But take your time and you'll figure it out. If they are intermittent it's mechanical. you are going to have to isolate what control is doing it.

Oh yes they do! Even when they are "fine" they are electrically noisy and are best replaced with a nice low ESR and/or low leakage electrolytic cap.

Not necessarily! Semiconductors can break down and make crackling or popping sounds. If it is mechanically intermittant you can thump on the unit and cause the fault. Lightly pushing on each board with a non conductive tool like a wood stick can sometimes isolate a mechanical issue. Good luck!!
