Marantz 2270 and the loudness button

Is it ok to listen on a regular basis to the Marantz 22XX series with the settings listed above?

I have a Marantz 2270, 2230, and 2220b and I enjoy listening to music with the bass mid and treble up quite a bit (2PM) and the loudness pressed in. From everything I read and what people say I feel guilty doing this and feel like I'm going to "Fry" something in the receivers. Is this true? Does anyone know what the factual deal is with this. So far nothing has happened - I do check to make sure that receivers don't seem too hot to the touch after a while.

If I keep listening this way what could happen or what could happen sooner to the receivers?

It just sounds better to my ear to listen this way and isn't that the whole point?

Most of the time with those settings I'm listening at a volume between 10P and 1P on the dial. I use several different sets of speakers on these receivers. Boston Acoustics A-100, Ohm Walsh 2, Modern Polk RTi A5 speakers, and Sansui Sp-3500's.

I would appreciate some feedback on the loudness button and appropriate settings for vintage receivers, particularly Marantz 22XX series.

Everyone has their preference and listening style. Don't worry what the "purists" say about no loudness and tones cenetered. It will not ruin your gear. It were dangerous or would negatively effect the life of the unit, it wouldn't be left to choice by the user.

The only thing I see being a problem is if your supply capacitors are aged, or dried up those transients may clip early. This is not something to loose sleep over.
 
Hey -Thanks for the input. I'm curious to see what the "purists" say too. How do you get more people to comment on these threads? What am I doing wrong?
Does it just take time? My only concern is repairs on these Marantz which take a long time and cost $$. Oh and in regards to the receivers - they are all restored new caps etc within the past year...so nothing aging or old inside.

For what it's worth, I listen with the loudness button in about 90% of the time with my 2270 and 2325. Classic Rock is my main genre and it just begs for lots of punch. On top of it, if my wife is out shopping, I raise the volume to rock concert levels while I can. :D
 
I usually use it for late night listening to overcome the Fletcher-Munson effect but I will switch it off at louder listening levels. Does anybody here know if the Marantz loudness circuit is tapered off as the volume is raised? I had an old Sony receiver that had this function which made a lot of sense.....raise the volume higher and the Loudness circuit is reduced linearly.

Haha that is awesome. yeah I try to listen to it without the button but eventually I'm like - screw it and hit the switch!

Yeah not sure on that - but I should mention that I do listen at pretty loud levels and that is why I was asking - I realize that at low levels the loudness button is fine to use - but I would say most of the time I'm at 11P or 12P on the volume
 
The loudness circuit is connected to a 'tap' on the volume control so as the volume is increased and approaches the 'tap', the loudness contour is diminished as it should to agree with Fletcher-Munson.
The 'tap' is usually at 40% of full volume.
In other words, the higher the volume the less low and high frequency boost.

Thanks for that explanation, Tom. Very clearly stated. I wasn't sure if that "tap" or tapering was a common thing or not.

Gee, I don't know but last night while listening to my 2270 with the button pushed in and Mariah Carey on the "Rockin New Years Eve" show it felt more like the Masters and Johnson effect....
 
Because the loudness function varies with the volume control, It is not a concern. By about 12 O'clock there is no compensation, and the amp may not clip until 1:00 - 3:00 O'clock. As far as the tone controls go, up to about +6 db (which might be about your setting) is likely safe to moderately loud volume. If you want to crank it for your favorite tune, I'd back the tone controls off to center. I think you will know if you are in dangerous power levels. Think of the kid in the mustang GT that's in a tight corner, and skidding. Most intelligent kids will back off before they hit the tree's.

I crank the snot out of my 2325 with the loudness button in. I keep it under 12 oclock though.
 
Thread resurrection. I would like to add a loudness button on my amp like what old 70's Marantz sound productuction.
