Marantz 2270, Bose 301 new speakers, buzz

I just hooked up my Marantz 2270; everything seems to work, although the on-off is sticky. Nice wood case, blue lights, faceplate is good (I am the widow of the original owner.)

I connected two new Bose 301 speakers and my AIWA D50 turntable, which works fine. Turntable has the red and white connectors and another wire, copper with a silver end, which is just hanging out there. I don't know what to do with that.

There's a buzz in the speakers. No buzz when selector is on something not connected, e.g., tape deck.

I don't plan to do anything myself to the Marantz and would appreciate a quick comment on whether I should take it somewhere for refurbishing, and whether that's likely to be responsible for the buzz. The sound is otherwise marvelous. SerTech Electronics (Ned) has been recommended for repair (SF Bay area). Any suggestions?

Welcome to AK and condolences on your loss.

That dangling wire from the turntable needs to be grounded to the ground terminal on the back panel and that should kill the buzz. That's a very highly regarded receiver you have there!

Actually I've been considering that and would be interested in what works well with the Marantz 2270 in limited space--and is available--I've noticed these brands/models reviewed:
Dynaudio Emit M10
Quad S1
B&W 685 S2

Well the 2270 sounds great with vintage or newer speakers in my opinion.

Generally there are two options, buy used vintage and your money will go farther but they might need some updating to sound their best. Or buy new
speakers that are ready to go right out of the box.

A few suggestions for vintage include ADS, Epi, JBL, Infinity, Yamaha, AR, Infinity, just to name a few. New I can recommend Dynaudio but they are pricey, Axiom, Paradigm. NHT, Elac, Energy are some brands that will not break the bank. Some of these can be found used as well if you are patient.

This just barely scratches the surface. Others will chime with even more suggestions.

Some good speakers pop up on our local SF Bay Area CL, just have to be willing to wait and ask questions. A lot of us here that would help with advice.

And condolences for your loss! Was this unit special to your husband as well?

Yes, it was special to my husband. He selected it and we used it--adding the AIWA D50 turntable (and an AKAI CS-732D tape deck) for years, until he opted for a remote-controlled smaller digital setup. Then the Marantz sat in the garage for 20 years or so. I even thought of hauling it to the Good Will, and then I googled it and found out it's considered outstanding vintage equipment. I may try to connect the Bose speakers to the television set, get some new ones for the Marantz.

Thank you for the suggestions on the speakers. The system is working so well now, I'm thinking of adding a CD player--maybe something like the Onkyo DX-C390, which seems to come with the right connectors for the Marantz. Anything better as a CD player for connecting with the Marantz?

Depending on your music and listening style, I'd just keep the 301's. I've had 301's for years and they are decent sounding speakers, if you don't need it too loud.

The are a bit picky about placement, but I think most speakers are anyway.

I can't comment on the CD player, don't know much about them.

Sorry for your lose. The big Marantz receivers are really good. Though the 301s aren't bad,there is better. Used a pr on a bedroom set years ago. Your 2270s output is 70 watts per channel. I own two 4270 4 channel receivers that I have set for stereo with 70 power. They like big speakers. Look into vintage speakers. Be patient, with luck you can find big speakers for little cost. If you have space, look,for large Pioneers, JBL, ADS and many others. My livingroom Marantz has JBL 100s. Great sound paid dearly $500. Not saying get these, I had to have them. I have found speakers much much less. My second Marantz 4270 has a pr of ADS 810. They were free. I fixed a turntable in barter. Last summer I had a guy give me four mint Pioneer CS 701s free! There are deals out there. Keep the 301 for now. Keep your eyes open.

As far as CDs go, just about anyone will work. Plug into AUX input. Check places like Goodwill, Sal Army. For,used stuff. Picked up a pr of AR speakers once.. $25. Part of the fun is the hunt. Good luck!

Thanks Dingman. I think they will be more effective if I get them off the floor--better placed between floor and ceiling.
