Marantz 2270 FM out

Hello, I have a Marantz 2270, and I am having a problem with FM receiving. Can anyone help?

Here's what's going on:
The tuning wheel appears to have come loose. I spin the wheel from the far right (higher numbered channels) and there is no movement of the tuning indicator for a while. With a whole lot of turning, it eventually begins to move, but at a slower than normal pace. The indicator moves, and stations are picked up, but all static. (I'm in downtown Toronto, with plenty of FM). I can get one, only one chat channel to tune. A few other channels come in very rough, but then de-tune if left for a while.

This loose tuning had already been going on, and I was able to tune stations, but it's worse now. The inability to tune a channel is new.

I am able to tune AM stations (despite the loose tuner) just fine, and they come in and stay tuned just fine. So it's only the FM.

You have a loose string and pulley assembly. If you are comfortable opening the unit and working with the string, you can likely fix it yourself. There are many tricks that I'm sure you will get in this thread. Some people put bees wax on the string. I have heard mixed results with that. There is a large white plastic pulley on the front of the tuning capacitor that has three turns of the string on it. Inside that pulley is a small spring with the string looped through it. That spring is the tensioner that is supposed to keep the string taught. Occasionally, if the dial will move at all, you can run it to its limit left and right and the tension spring will loosen up and pull on the string better. Other times you have to manually fiddle with the spring to get it to pull more. And last resort, you have to remove the string from the dial pointer and shorten it a little by tying some knots in it. That means you have the daunting task of getting the string set up properly with all of the pulleys. Not always easy. The service manual has a graphic showing the exact path of the string over the pulleys. Hopefully others can give you some other ideas. Good luck!

Channels all static- either out of alignment or something is blown in the tuner- i'm going to hazard a guess that something is fried, typically they don't "lose" alignment unless someone went in there fiddling with things they don't know about. Basically you need to bring it to someone who knows how to repair FM tuners.
 
Watching as I have a similar issue with a 4270. My string isn't loose but the tuner was a pile when I got this unit, I had it aligned, still no stereo, took back to tech who got another used MPX board and recapped and installed it, now I have good reception but it does drift when left on a long time. I am curious to hear what the resolution to this is because it's a nice sounding unit now with just this one flaw.

From the OP's description, this sounds more like a mechanical problem than an electrical problem to me. Sounds like Gyro-tune wheel is slipping on the string.
 
How so, he said am tunes no problem- same tuning cap. AM tunes yet FM doesn't, something in the FM is blown, probably a transistor.
 
Most likely the tuning cap needs cleaning. See "How to clean an analog tuner" in the Tuner forum.
For the dial string, get some violin rosin, scrape some into a bit of alcohol to dissolve it, and apply it to the dial cord. Let it dry and your slipping will be gone.

Yeah, I see. I was just reading the part about spins the wheel but no movement of the tuning indicator.:dunno:
 
I had a completely different solution for my 2325. The tuner glass was coming loose from the chassis at the top and putting pressure on the tuning indicator light and no matter how hard or fast I tried to spin the wheel the thing wouldn't move. Had to re-glue the glass and velum. I had originally used double stick tape.
 
Thanks guys, got called away from this. It gives me a lot to go on, much appreciated. I'm going to bring it in for repair and I'll post the result in a few weeks.
