Marantz 2270 issue

I picked up a nice marantz 2270 and have thoroughly cleaned all the pots and switches. I get equal audio output with a device plugged in to either the tape 1 or tape 2 inputs with the tape monitor switch engaged. All other sources (phono/aux/FM/AM) give me output from 1 channel only. Interestingly, when I push the Hi Blend button in, I will get sound from both channels, with one a little lower than the other. Suggestions?

The high blend switch takes the higher frequencies and make them into mono, sending that mono signal to both channels, used to cut bad noise on distant FM stations or bad recordings.

Since both channels seem to work thru your tape monitor switches, me thinks the problem may be in your selector switch. Deoxit 5 works good to clean that switch, too.

I must have used a 1/4 of the can on the selector function switch contacts to no avail. Could it still be the tape monitor switch? I'm thinking of drilling a small hole into the tape monitor switch for better access to spray with deoxit. Thoughts?
 
Could be either switch. Try looping Tape IN/OUT with an interconnect, set source selector to FM, press Tape Monitor and see if you get both channels form FM. If yes then the problem is definitely in the Tape Monitor switch. If no, it could still be either, but I think source selector would be more likely culprit.
 
I went to the schematic on hifiengine. It could be your source/tape switch, too.

Here is another dumb question....do you get anything out of the headphone jack?
 
Headphone jack same thing...I put rca interconnects on the tape loop and set it to FM with the tape monitor switch in and still only 1 channel
 
OK, so this could still be one of these two switches or wiring between them. Do you have a multimeter? You could feed a constant signal (like 1 kHz, generated from PC) to aux input and see where it disappears from the affected channel (by comparing readings with the channel that works). I would start by measuring output taps of the source selector switch and output and input taps (for source, not tape) of the tape monitor switch.

If you don't have a multimeter, you can use a driver from headphones to test this (just remember to feed normal, line level signal, nothing stronger). If you use headphones to test, you can use music as signal, even an FM station.
 
Thanks for the reply, I'm a little confused. I don't know how to hook up a PC to this. I do have a multimeter. Not sure what a headphone driver is. Can you explain in dummy laymans terms, I'm a little bit smarter than a trained monkey, thanks
 
Headphone driver is the little "speaker" inside headphones. If you connect it to a line output of a CD or computer sound card, it makes sound, just like from a headphone output. And the signal that runs through the two suspected switches in your Marantz is a line level audio signal, so you can safely connect headphones to it (using a bit of wire) and listen. Just don't try to connect headphones them anywhere else :)

You connect a PC just like any other source of music (like a CD player), with a cable from the PC/laptop headphone output to Marantz's AUX input. Then you play a 1 kHz soud file on your PC/laptop. If you don't have a file like that, you can find it on youtube. Just loop a youtube video.

If you use multimeter, 1 kHz is good (better than music for example) because it is the same signal all the time, it will give you a clear reading.
 
Clean EVERYTHING! Sorry for the shouting, I know every squirt of deox is like emptying your wallet. Signal runs through many of the push buttons. You can get an idea which one it the most likely by working the buttons and knobs vigorously when you are getting channel cutout.
 
I did, I cleaned everything. No cutout at all, just no left channel. Except with tape monitor switch in I can get both channels. So, there are a boatload of wires on the selector switch, where do I hook the headphone driver up to? And what am I checking for?
 
Look for wires that run from the source selector switch to the Tape monitor switch. Either with headphones or a multimeter, you need to connect to to the taps for these wires. You need to connect one multimeter probe/headphone connection wire to L or R channel lead, the other multimeter probe/headphone connection wire to ground. If you play a 1 kHz tone, you should get the same signal or multimeter reading from both channels. Find the place where it disappears in the bad channel.

Also look for loose/disconnected wires.

There is a post that explains disassembly and cleaning of the switches in question - It's a sticky in the Marantz section of the forum. I had the same problem with my 2240B.

Sometimes you have to disassemble a switch to clean it. No amount of cleaner will work. I know. I have been there many times. It is delicate work so if you are shaky handed or need glasses I would let someone else do it. It can be a PITA.
