Marantz 2270 Selector Knob Partially Broken

Up until now all of my posts have been in the Pioneer forum. The other day I sold one of my receivers and came across a 2270. Since I've never owned a Marantz I was interested and ended up buying it. I may be having buyers remorse I haven't decided quite yet. I have been having a hard time getting it to switch into stereo mode on stations I don't normally have trouble with. But that's not the reason for this post. Although any thoughts or advice related to that issue would be helpful.

I took the receiver out of the wood case it came in along with the other metal case just to give it a look over. I also took the faceplate off and bottom cover. When removing the knobs I noticed that the selector switch without the knob on it was pinched together on the end. So like I have done several times on other receivers I grabbed my tiny flathead screwdriver and just inserted it where I could and gave a slight twist. Well it broke the end of the switch in two. Basically I can put the knob on it but its half broken off it you can picture that. I have no idea how I'd go about repairing this switch. Soldering in an entirely new switch looks like a daunting task. Additionally I did I quick search online and couldn't even find one. Anyone have any thoughts about this? What can I do?

Replace the shaft of the existing Selector switch using a shaft from a donor switch. There is a procedure for it that makes it go quickly when done right.

The shaft is held in by the heads of the bolts holding the switch together. The bolts are chased out using a nail. This keeps the switch together while the shaft is swapped out. There are threads describing this in detail but since I just did one yesterday I have some pictures handy.

Chase out the bolt with the nail


Now the nail has replaced the bolt. Do this to the other bolt.


The shaft pulls out freely now.


New shaft, old bent shaft


Caveat: make sure the new shaft is clicked into the same position as the one coming out. Make sure you don't spin the shafts while removing or installing, because you need the 4 spinning switches to stay the same relative to each other. If they get out of whack, it kills the sound and really messes with the lights. It can turn a 10 minute procedure into a 2 hour puzzle. Don't ask me how I know.

Edit: The 2245 and 2270 use different shafts, with the 2270 having one additional position.

The 2245 and 2270 use the same shaft. The Selector switch from a lot of models use the same length shaft with 5 positions. The one in the pictures is a 2235.

This is what I needed! Now I need to find a donor switch.

Edit: I just ordered a 2245 switch.

I heat up the shaft while gently spreading the splines with a screwdriver..also works if the whole shaft is bent but it is very fragile & brittle and so easy to bust it..whatever the case take lots of clear pics in case a wire breaks..marantz has a lot of solid wire instead of braided..also mega-brittle

Good idea! It's never occurred to me to heat one up. But now that this has happened I'm going to be a lot more careful.

The whole thing seemed a bit bent to begin with. Going to attempt the swap.

In the future, you can usually just leave the knob on it and bend it back. That's what I have done many times.

Yeah that make sense. The whole mess started by me trying to spread the splines that the knob slides on to. Basically I had apart then noticed it was pinched. Then figured oh I'll just straighten this out real quick. Doh!

I'm reviving this thread because I finally got around to installing the 2245 switch I had bought. Then after a huge headache with the installation I found that the 2245 switch post didn't have enough positions on it for the 2270. I really wish I would have checked beforehand!

Does anyone know of another receiver that would have the correct number of function positions? Basically it needs to click 5 times for 6 functions.

It's no big deal. The information on how to do the swap was very helpful. Where I went wrong was not using long enough nails to hold everything together. Hopefully someone can help me find something that will work.
