Marantz 2270

My dad recently gave me his 2270 Marantz receiver and I'm wondering if it needs recapping or not. I've had it hooked to his NS-1000's and it sounds phenomenal to me (granted I haven't heard a recapped one). It hasn't been used for some years now but everything seems ship shape.

If you haven't already, check to see if the two filter capacitors are looking bad and if so, replace them for sure.

They look fine to me. I did have an issue with the left channel going out and becoming staticy and then coming in clear again but that seems to have cleared up for now.

One of the tuner lights goes out occasionally but will come back on when I push the low and hi-filter buttons in and out at the same time. I'm curious if that's indicative of some larger electrical issue or not.

Sooner or later it will need recapped. Typically a cap gone bad will only cause bad sound or no sound with no damage.

The filter caps being referred to are the two large ones, mounted right to the chassis and are cylindrical in shape. Take off the bottom cover (unplug from the wall first!) and look at the bottom side of them, looking for bulges or electrolyte (goop) leakage.

That's one heck of a setup. I would love to own a set of those Yamahas. There's a pair on BarterTown but pick up only in New Jersey. With that setup, I would think your money would be wisely spent to have the 2270 recapped along with some of the other updates mentioned on this forum (e.g. diff pair replaced, bias transistor replaced, sc458 replaced, etc.) There are several guys on AK who would do a phenomenal job of making your 2270 even more fantastic.

The ns-1000's aren't mine to keep they're on my dads stereo set up. I'm looking for some vintage speakers to pair with it, something with a lot of bass like the yamaha's but something a little less expensive. I'm thinking of buying a new pair of speakers to pair with it until I can find some vintage speakers I really like.

Congrats on receiving a 2270 and kudos for putting it back in service.

What serial number is it?

The earlier ones should get the factory recommended upgrade to the bias transisters.

There is a restoration/upgrade that can be done to the phono amp that really improves them.

I recently resorted one for another AK member and they are very pleased with the results.

I recently found another one and plan on restoring it myself.

I did a search on eBay and saw two that had a lot of restoration done, I don't know the full extent, but they showed that they sold in the big money ($1700).

There is a lot of love for that model. Rightly so. When working well, they really shine.

Congrats on the 2270 and welcome to AK, your dad really hooked you up! +1 on checking the filter caps, I've seen so many with that little blob of goo leaking out between the terminals. The intermittent static you can likely remedy with a can of deoxit to clean up the controls.

The Relay bug?

The intermittent channel drop-out is possibly the relay, if your 2270 is a one-owner unit the relay may never have been replaced. These receivers were infamous for relay problems, there is a factory service bulletin (M-2270-4) on it. It's an easy replacement.

I've owned my 2270 since I purchased it new in 1975, I experienced the issue and remedied it by first (temporary) cleaning the relay contacts; then permanently (as permanent as anything electronic can be) with a new relay.

blhagstrom I don't have access to the receiver right now as I'm up at school and I decided to wait until after I restore it to set it up (plus I don't want anyone spilling beer on it :tongue but I will post the serial as soon as I get back to it.

The static I don't believe is an issue with the controls. I had problems with very loud static when I first plugged in the receiver and volume coming through when the knob was at zero but after moving the knob around back and forth quickly I was able to get that to stop. I did the same thing with the balance knob just in case but as this only happens to the left channel I believe it is something else. Plus its more of a lack of sound more than static. I had the receiver running for at least 6 hours at high volume with no problems and it was only the next day that this problem started. I did open it up and blow some dust out and that's when the left channel started cutting out occurred but as I said it seems to have stopped for now.

The stereo light is out and as I understand there are two bulbs for "STEREO" and if one goes out they both go out so I'm guessing I'll have to replace one. The PHONO lights don't come on either, is that connected to the lights for STEREO? I'd like to do a total restoration on the lights with warm LED's like these http://www.ebay.com/itm/MARANTZ-211...833?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item20f9c8f791 there are several of these on ebay but none say its specifically for the 2270 but they are the same size (I think?). It's good that the lights on 2270 are easier to replace than on later Marantzs with no worry of plastic tabs or any other plastic to break.

When it comes to noisy 2270's most common issues I see, dirty controls (specifically tape monitor causes channel drop out), relay (replace it), input differential amp leakage (again replace). The latter usually is a non volume dependent pops and crackles.

Can I use the tape (play) inputs on the back for something like an aux cord or a cd player?

All are 8v 50ma bi pin bulbs. Stereo light is two in series, replace them both. AKer dgwojo has good incandescent replacements. I've replaced all lighting with LED, the Northridge Electronics kit with great results. Replace the vellum diffuser paper as well to bring the correct blue back.

IIRC tape input has a slightly higher resistor at the inputs.
