Marantz 2275 Help Please!

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to the forum but have read quite a few posts over the years. I'm hoping to get some help with a Marantz 2275 receiver I got yesterday from my Dad.

It was very dusty and I painstakingly cleaned off most of the dust inside before plugging it in. The unit powered up no problem, but the phones jack doesn't work and I can only hear the am and fm when I use headphones through the output jack. I could feel the heat sink on the right side getting warm as normal (I suspect), but the heatsink on the left side was cold and I think it's not getting power (I'm assuming this model has 2 power supplies from the looks of the 2 large heatsinks on opposite sides from each other). A couple of selector bulbs are out but the power issues are my main concern to start.

I'm a total newbie to this type of repair, but I do have tons of soldering experience and a decent knowledge of basic electronics. I would like to try and fix it myself if feasible, but I need some help with a starting point. I'm hoping someone else might know a good place to begin trying to trace what the problem(s) might be?

Thanks in advance for any help and suggestions.

First of all, do you hear the relay click a few seconds after it turns on?
Did you connect speakers to the speaker terminals? What were you connecting headphones to, the speaker outputs? Do not do that as when messing around with connections there you can easily short out the amplifier and do major damage where there might not be much wrong right now.

Thanks for responding. I do hear the relay click after starting up. I should have been more clear about the phones, on the front of my 2275 is an 6.35mm output and input jack. I think it's a line level output, I can hear both am and fm through it when I connect the phones to it.

So, did you connect any speakers to the speaker jacks? It is possible for the headphone output not to work and the speaker outputs could work.
Also:
Make sure the tape monitor switch is set to "Source."
On the rear of the unit, there are 2 sets of jacks, "Main In" and "Preamp Out." Preamp out may have to be connected to Main In by a cable. Some Marantz amps had internal switches in the jack if nothing is plugged into them, others need a cable.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I don't have speakers readily available. I'll have to take my home theatre system apart. This might be a silly question, but I can wire up a car speaker to test the speaker jacks right?

Yes, as long as you connect the wires at both ends in such a way that the 2 wires can't touch together. Always make connections with the power off.

Welcome to AK.
The 2275 is not the type of receiver to learn on. As stated above, causing more damage is possible.

I tried all the speaker outputs with no result. They're dead quiet.

I've never heard of the pre out to main in before, are you pretty confident that won't hurt anything? I have some cables to jump them.....

So I jumped the pre and main and tried again, nothing. I just noticed the multipath button won't stay depressed, it's not grabbing and pops right back out. I'm not sure if that might be causing issues?

Also, I'm not hearing a relay clicking when powering up the unit. I got 3 receivers yesterday and may have confused it with another, pertaining to the relay that is.

Normal function of the Multipath switch. It's a momentary switch. You depress it to view the amount of FM multipath. Release it to turn it off.

That's interesting about the multipath button, I had no idea. My next step is cleaning the buttons and controls. I'll check back after cleaning.

No relay click means you either have a problem in one of the power amps, or possibly a power supply problem or a fault in the protection circuit. I think your best bet is to take this to a qualified tech.

Are the power amps opposite each other like I guessed? (the big heatsinks across from each other)
Yes. This receiver is rather complicated and valuable to be your first experience at troubleshooting. You may find that the output transistors on one channel are shorted but if you don't find and replace every bad component, it could blow again immediately upon turn on. It's the type of repair that only an experienced tech should take on. Just saying.
If you insist on doing it yourself, search for how to test a transistor. Then test the output transistors on the channel that is cold (there is probably a blown fuse and that's why it's cold). If you find any bad ones, test every transistor on the amplifier board and replace any that are bad. Test all the resistors connected to any bad transistors. And don't buy replacement transistors on E-Bay, there are many counterfeits. Buy from Digikey, Mouser or BD Enterprises.

I recommend a tech familiar with vintage also but you seem to be headed for DIY.

Find a service manual online. Hifi-engine.com may have it.

You want to locate the relay on your unit and measure the amp output lines.

Do you know how to use a multi-meter safely?

Do you have good soldering tools? De soldering?

You'll need a dim bulb tester at some point. Built one of those.

Do not guess at anything. Take the time to know what you are doing. There is a lot of info here and people willing to help.

The manual is right here in our own database: http://akdatabase.com/AKview/albums/Marantz/Marantz 2275 Service Manual.pdf

It's possible the "cold" channel is fine as with no load they don't heat up much at all. The warm one may just have the bias set too high anbd possibly it's okay too! But one of them may be bad and causing the relay circuit not to fire. That can be measured with a meter set to dc volts. There are wires going to the bottom side of the relay that can be measured to see if it's an amp or a faulty detection circuit and quite often that is a leaky 220uF timing cap. Do NOT jump across the relay contacts to see which channel is bad - you'll find out why it's called the "speaker protection" relay! :yikes:

I appreciate the comments and suggestions from everyone.

I have to agree that this receiver might not be the best one for me to learn/start with as my first DIY repair/restore. I have less complicated ones I can tinker with in the meantime.

I am currently getting some quotes from local repair places. I've had a good read through the Canadian Repair thread (I'm just east of Toronto) and decided to contact a few places to get rough estimates, etc. There's a gentleman named Drago who's mentioned a few times and recommended by several forum members who's already given me a great price, as well as DNAelectronics and NationalSound, I'm waiting to hear from both.

I'm interested in hearing from others if I should have a restoration done on it, or just a recapping/repair/tune?

Also, the prices for the 2275 seem varied on local buy and sells, and on ebay. Does anyone have an idea what this unit roughly sells for? I will have a hard time restoring it if the job cost more than the unit is worth.

Thanks again guys,

Adam
