Marantz 2275 Issue - Need Help

Hi Everyone,

I have been having an issue with my Marantz 2275. The issue is that the receiver seems to cut out at a random point during use. By cut out, I mean the audio ceases. All power, lighting etc, stays on, just the audio abruptly cuts out. This is happening regadless of AM, FM, Aux, Phono, selection.

I brought it to my local audio store to have a look. After two weeks, the gentlement there has told me that it is a "lost cause". I refuse to believe that this receiver is now scrap as it does play, cuts out, will play again, but cuts out.

Does anyone have any idea what this could be? OR Does anyone know of a good Marantz Tech in Toronto?

Thanks for your help.

it is possessed ..
no seriously its more than likely something simple ..bad solder joint or bad connection somewhere bad relay maybe ? or even dirty switches . worst case failing components .i wouldn't think a lost cause though your man has no patience to help you . random faults are the worst to find .if its a time thing then heating and cooling things can help in a diagnosis .maybe it can here too .

It seems that both channels are going in and out. It is likely something related to the protection circuit. It could be a fault in the relay driver circuit, or a fault in one channel and the protection circuit opens the relay, to protect your speakers.

First thing to do is to measure the DC voltage at the output, for each channel, with volume down to minimum.

This is not a lost cause. The lost cause is your local audio store.

I agree, it seems they'd rather sell you new equipment than admit to their inability to assist in a repair.
A good tech can be very hard to find locally.
Lucky for you you've found AK.:D
The Marantz 2275 is a fine receiver; but it was mfg between 1974 and 1977,

... time for a little TLC. Personally, I'd plan to keep your 2275; but begin a serious search for a tech who knows Marantz, and has done numerous refurbs on similar vintage Marantz receivers. It's well worth the cost, as your 2275 will last virtually forever with proper maintanance. Not to mention how good it will sound once the refurb is completed.

I sware I had same issue with a Marantz in college (79ish). Techs could never get it to cut out while in the shop - talkin months here. Finally happened and they fixed it. Believe it was a solder joint. As mentioned by others, you just need a good tech. No way that 2275 is DOA yet.

When it cuts in and out do you hear the relay clicking?
It is a pretty easy receiver to work on.

You'll have to forgive my lack of technicial knowledge, but is the relay the "click" you hear when you power the unit on?

If so, yes I do hear that click.

it should click a few seconds after switch on .maybe 3 or 4 seconds
some pictures of inside may help to see the general condition

'Lost cause'? No.
'Lose a tech' Yes
As noted above, a few simple measurements will rule out a lot of the reasons for the unit going quiet on you. If you feel brave and can follow along many members in the forum would be glad to guide you through the steps required for basic diagnosis. The 2275 is also one of my favorite units in the Marantz line for its sonics, looks, and ease of repair. Virtually indestructable with a little tlc.

Sad that the shop took two weeks to inform you of their incompetence. This receiver isn't that complicated in the circuits that might cause the behavior you describe....
Now, the tuner, that is sorta complicated, lol.

Just to give everyone an update on this, I brought the unit to the great people at DNA Electronics in Kitchener and had the unit completely rebuilt. Needless to say this baby is humming again and back to its great warm sound. Might be better than when I first received the unit. Thanks to DNA and thanks to you all for your help.

I live in the GTA and can offer to service your unit. Send me a PM and we can discuss further.
Rick

thanks rcs16, but not needed. DNA rebuilt it for me and it's back to its original great sound. maybe i shouldn't have used the word "humming" in my last post, but i meant it in a positive way. haha.
