Marantz 2285 left channel not working

Greetings. I bought a second hand (in great condition, clean, working very well) Marantz 2285 receiver last year from a shop in Germany which sells nice hi-fi equipment.

It's worked flawlessly for me (only that a couple display backlight bulbs are in need of replacing), except in the past week the left channel speaker starting cutting in and out, a bit scratchy... then it would come back and hold fine again. This went on and on. I checked connections, etc. Everything was fine.

Today, it went out completely. The speaker plays fine in right channel, so not speaker or cable. And right speaker also won't play when plugged into left channel. 2285 has speaker 1/2 system, and I tested in both of them, and in both systems left channel is out.

What has gone wrong? Is this a simple fix? Or a major issue. In other words, is this a 'change the fuse by myself' job, or is this an open it up/take it to a qualified repairman job?

I'm a complete novice with regards to any kind of hi-fi repair, unfortunately, so don't know if I'm dealing with something major or minor.

Thank you so much for any tips/advice!

Cheers,
Damen

Start by operating all the switches and pots especially all the push buttons and rotary switches. Dirty/corroded switches are a common source of problems.

The Main In/Pre Out jacks have switches inside them that corrode and will cause the symptoms you describe. It's easy to test. Use an RCA cable to connect each Main In jack to its respective Pre Out jack. It may suddenly work.
