Marantz 2285B: Best Sounding Receiver?

I'm new to vintage stereo but would like to ask about vintage Marantz receivers with the champagne colored faceplates. Are these available on most of their receivers?
In particular the 2285B.
I've looked on ebay at 2285b's and they all appear to be silver.

The champagne units are only available on the 2270, 2245 down to the 2215. They were not made on any 22xxb models.

I just came a cross a rarity: 2285BD, can't believe my luck ,these are so rare, it was listed as a 2285, the bid went for $629, the face plate is mint and came with a WC-22 case in decent shape , good old Ebay amazing place for audio, going to do a full resto, using Solen caps and Elna Silmic and Nichicon PW low ESR for the power supply thanks to Leestereo for his info , I will post a picture when done
I collect these beauty I have : 2500, 2385, 2325, 1250, 4400 it is a passion...

What's the difference in a BD and regular B?

here is an old thread about it http://audiokarma.org/forums/index.php?threads/marantz-2285bd-in-the-house.121250/
i guess the D stands for dolby and the selector knob has a FM 25 selection (dont know what that is ) and one less aux then the B model

Interesting. Thanks! I wonder if that 25 uS selection could be something ready for what they thought would be Dolby FM standard?

The BD also came with the Dolby module that plugs into the rear panel receptacle.

There is a bit of info on Dolby FM here.

The 2285BD showed up at my door this morning , let the fun begin I am hopping that the boards are not to hard to access 2285BD antenna 001.jpg 2285BD antenna 005.jpg

Very interesting there is a shaft that runs true the unit from the Selector control to access the board , I think that the unit is all original !
Lots of capacitors to change , this will be a good winter project wile

I've recapped a 2245 and 2285B, to me they sound like most have described them:

2245 = warm
2285B = versatile, clear, sweet, and with plenty of power.

I really like the 2285B, but I'd have to hear the 2270 and 2325 before saying where it fits in the Marantz 22xx lineup.

Also, I prefer the look of the 22xx series with the metal radio dials that you can see even when dial lamps are off.

Will see if any one notices a new post.
I have a 2238b and like it alot but until recently it sees some use but has not been my primary. Its' a beauiful reciever and in showroom condition but the bulk of my speakers have desired a tad more or some.. much more power than this beauty could ever hope to muster. I recently aquired a 50 year old pair of Cornwall lls ( the 60s versions not the second issue 80s C.W.s) and they are quite happy with a bit less power. I have a chance to pick up a 2285.
Is this a huge upgrade to what I have in the 2238b Other than a bump in power?
I am not new to the Marantz line as I was around and buying gear back in the glory days when it was new.
I wasn't at the time overly attracted to the Marantz gear so I really never gave it much thought.
I wish I had but hindsight is just that.
I am in the process of discovery with my 2238b and find it is a jewel!
Is the 2285 more So? I am thinking 85 per is more than I would ever need for these speakers but I am a believer in idle power and headroom So?
Thanks , NemoBit:idea::bye:o_O:wtf:

If it is a 2285 (not B) then I would consider it an upgrade at least in build quality. The 2285B is no slouch either, I just prefer the older, black dialed stuff.
