Marantz 2285B Cap Replacemnt

Great work! :thmbsp:

Interesting thread for me, because I have a 2285B that I'll have to do this to, sometime soon. Nice to see one good way to do the work-around for the no-longer-made dual caps. Looks like a lot of work, though, and in tight quarters. I don't look forward to this particular "challenge".

I just purchased a 2285b that is supposed to be pretty good, waiting for it to arrive. Would you say this cap problem is a design flaw? Is it something that will end up costing me an arm and a leg? Doing this type of work is currently beyond my capabilities.

It's simply a consequence of Marantz choosing an oddball part...and the fact that they are 30 years old now and these oddball parts are long gone.

That design was interesting in that it was a step up from the standard single +/- rails and it saved space over having two separate supplies. But it's a bit of pain 30 years later.... I always liked the idea of dual +/- rails.

EW,

A guy named "capacitor12" is selling Nichicon 63v 6800uf Radial Capacitors on eBay. Do you use this type of capacitors to do the recap?

No...I used snap-in caps. They are usually rated for slightly higher ripple current. The flimsy leads of a standard radial cap would have made the job more difficult. I suppose you could build a small PC board to mount the radial caps to and do it that way.

Beefing up power supply capacitors for 2285B

Hi,

My power supply capicitors shot, looking for replacements. Looked at 6800uf/63v at mouser but tempted to increase them to 10000uf/63v as price differential is very minimal. Looked at the bridge rectifier used, it is S5VB20, which is also used in Marantz 170DC with 12000uf/63v per rail. I guess the increased value of capacitors can be handled by the bridge, but my question is whether the increased inrush current can be handled by the power transformer or not? Is there any advantage in increasing the filter capacitors?

Thanks,
vint_rao

Big fan of Echowars

Hi,

Is there any advantage in increasing the filter capacitors?

Thanks,
vint_rao

Always better to replace with proper value , I feel Marantz got it right in the first place , and I think increasing can put undo stress on some older components ( unless its a total makeover ). I'm not a pro but it just seems like common sense to me. Echo or Catrafter are the pro's I figured I throw that out there as I was saying...........................Excellent job Echowars. I have read many of your posts and I'm a big fan. I have a 2330B that I was thinking of switching out the big caps , but its much the same hassle or more.
This thread just proved it. Would be the last (and toughest ) thing to do on her and I'm a procrastinating bast@#$.......:music: :lmao:

Echo

Echowars...We have so much fun playing with them ( at least I do..lol ) that we sometimes forget the most important aspect......almost slipped my mind......How does she sound compared to pre capping ?? Details please :smoke:

Sorry to dig up an old thread - in case anyone is looking at EchoWars' beautiful work here and wondering how they'd ever do that themselves, I solved the same problem with a less skilled, slightly simpler approach shown in this thread.
