Marantz 2285b in Austin with original boxes...

Wow, if it at least works, that's a good deal on a 2285b.
Remember doing a total recap years ago and was fun and sounded great.

When they say this "So at this point I'm not going to test it. I would have a tech go through it first and check the caps just to be safe. It very well may need to be recapped.", I figure it is not working. For the record, the asking price is $1100.

Seems high to me even by SF Bay Area standards.

The quote about the tech and "may need caps", means its probably got a massive hum in one channel or both..

Ad deleted! Someone felt it was worth 1000.00. Likely a restorer to flip unit. Fairly easy recap! Worth 2500.00+ after recap!

I would tend to agree that setting up the potential for a recap should lead one to be cautious, especially since he wasn't taking any steps to confirm the performance. However, I've also bought excellent components from folks that just didn't care enough to investigate. I bought a Sony STR-6065 from a guy that said it worked fine when he stuck it in the garage, but had no way to test it and was assuming it would have problems. I paid him $45 and after installing $5 in LED bulbs and the standard Deoxit treatment, it has performed like new ever since. Hopefully, whoever bought the Marantz is an end user that had it on his ultimate wish list.

I purchased the Marantz 2285B yesterday evening for his full asking price. I was not looking for a steal and he seemed pretty honest. We met at his house not a gas station parking lot. It was not on any wish list that I had. I am just a small collector and have been on the lookout for a higher wpc Marantz than my 2215B and wanted something other than a 2270. I was looking at a 4300 quad I prefer the looks but it would not work with 4ohm speakers in stereo from my understanding. After communicating with the seller I felt it was worth looking at being he lived only 5 minutes from my house. After a good cleaning. It was already pretty clean powered it up and have run it most of the day. The only issue I have noticed is a dropped channel when using AUX I have not tried to resolve the issue. Seller told me he thought it had too much bass and he did not like the way it sounded so he did not use it much after purchasing and also told me he is a tube guy. Personally I prefer the Sansui look and sound. I will keep it in my rotation for now. I feel the sound like every other receiver/amp will have to grow on me and I will need to find some speakers in my closet it synergizes with.

Welcome to AK!
I was never a fan of Marantz receiver sound, but like you said, it grew on me. Over the last several years, I've collected 2285, 2270, 2220, and etc. had ton of fun recapping and restoring. Honestly, I still enjoy the looks more than their sound. Recently compared the performance of 2220 to 2270 and did not really notice much difference, but then I was using a very efficient speakers though.
