Marantz 2285B Unrestored Value

Hey all. I'm new to AK and have been trying to find info on the current value of an unrestored 2285B. I have a deposit down on one at a local shop and the asking price is $750. I'm seeing a lot of threads discussing fair values of other models (especially the 2270) but I'm not seeing much of anything about the current value of an unrestored 2285B. Considering the cost of a full restoration by a professional, I'd be looking at $1300-1500 all in. Does that seem about right?

Depends a lot on condition and current operational status. Me, I think that's on the high side. I'd be looking at $350-450 unless mint condition and working well.
 
eBay completed listings show 15-17 listed or sold from $460 to 1200, median price about $675
 
I paid $799.00 for minty one but it included a mint case as well. if it includes a wood case $750 is a good price. being local its worth a little more as you can give it a try and not worry about it getting smashed during delivery without the case if it is in really good condition it would be a bit on the high side but might be worth it to you if you really want it. its not always about getting the best price you may not see another one for sale locally for quite awhile.
 
Also on the restore side of it, the 2285b might cost a little more to do a full restore as it has dual main filter caps which are not made anymore so a work around has to be done which adds a little more time.
 
The 2285B used to be flying under the radar compared to a 2275 or 2325 which are going for killer $ now.

Lately (in the last couple years) the prices have been climbing.

It's an 85 watt/channel receiver with a good phono and tuner section.

In good unrestored condition $600-700 is not out of the question.

I think some of the really low numbers shown in the "completed-sold listings" were "buy it now" prices sellers listed that people immediately jumped on .

I appreciate the quick, informative replies. I'll give it a thorough inspection and good listen when the shop gets done cleaning it up and see how I feel about it. This is my first move into vintage receivers and I have a lot to learn.

Any checklist items to look for other than looking for bulging caps would be greatly appreciated.

No wood case on this one, unfortunately. Great advice on it being local and not having to worry about shipping damage. I know how the delivery guys handle packages and have been wondering how much of a risk that is. Thanks!

I just sold a restored unit for $1250. Unfortunately we have people that will pay that much for an unrestored one. I can see spending $750 for one in mint condition with a wood cabinet and original boxes, but we are seeing people paying crazy money for units that have 40 year old capacitors. It is supply and demand, but its also the excitement of having a nice looking unit, and can be restored at a later date.

The unit i sold had the original filters in mint condition on the outside and checked out fine from what i remember. I think i compared the AC across them to my restored 2325 or 2275 units. It had all new elna silmic capacitors, new diodes and electrolytics were upgraded to films. Anyhow, i also gave a one year Warranty on the unit. The same unit was sold a month later and the seller only got $850 some bucks for it. I wish i would have known that he was selling it earlier and i could have helped him with his sale by providing a warranty transfer to the new buyer, but after i saw that he lost his butt on it, i figured the new buyer got more than a deal on it.
So i will say that some sellers really use words like "very nice" and Restored and Serviced to con people into buying stuff that has rusted screws and marks and flaws hidden by out of focus pictures or pictures of the new black face plate that somehow made the unit worth $700 more than it would sell for normally. its a crazy world out there.
