Marantz 22xx Series Faceplate: Hex Bolts or Screws...

Ok, I am a bit of a newbie to the Marantz universe. I started out with a 4140 that I did not need (not enough speakers)...now I have an MR 235, Model 2225 and 2230. With all of these, I have notice one thing on the face plate....some models (2225, 4140) have have the Hex Bolts, Others (2230) have regular Phillips screws)

Do some model numbers use hex bolts exclusively while others use Phillips exclusively? Or do Hex's and Screws appear on the same model from time to time?

Some, typically the older 22xx series models used screws...The newer models including all of the 22xxb, 23xx and 23xxb as well as some 22xx used hex bolts. I think they switched at some point around, 75-76??
 
Oh man! The 4140 is my favorite Marantz!

I think the conversion to hex bolts was closer to 73-74. My 4100 has the Philips screws.
 
I just bought a 2226 that is missing one front faceplate hex screw.
Are they available on-line or does anyone have one sitting around they would sell/part with?

They pop up from time to time on ebay....
 
In the models with the screws (the earlier ones), the screws helped fasten the model to it's cabinet in addition to the bolts underneath. On the models with hexbolts, the bolts fastened the faceplate to the chassis. The only way of securing the cabinet was from underneath.
 
Sun Valley vs Chatsworth

I'm surprised some of the Marantz experts have not chimed in on this. I'm far from a Marantz expert, but here's my nickels worth.
I believe the early Marantz 22xx receivers made in Sun Valley California had the small phillips screws while the later Chatsworth California units had the hex bolts.
Check the back of your receivers.

Now, this convention does not hold true with 510M amps. Both my Sun Valley 510M and my later 510M that was made in Chatsworth both have the hex bolts.
 
You may also notice that the Sun Valley units tend to have the woodgrain cabinet while most of the Chatsworths tend to have the black cabinet. I agree that the 510M is somewhat of an anomaly as mine also says Sun Valley on the back and has the hex bolts. I get very annoyed when I see an otherwise perfect faceplate and see radial scratches around the hex bolts because some careless person doesn't first line the socket wrench with a non-scratching material.

Completely agree with that complaint. I think it is worse than not lining the socket wrench: I actually saw a guy once using an adjustable wrench (like a plumber would use, but in a smaller size) to remove faceplate bolts. Sure enough, when I looked closer he had managed to add several nicely "artistic" circular designs of his own to the original faceplate design.
