Marantz 2325 no power after shorting power amp.

Just when I thought I was in the clear it seems an old problem has come back to haunt me..

The left channel has started cutting in and out again. This is one of the reasons I decided to recap in the first place. The problem initially occured when I was driving two sets of speakers (both 8 ohms) at louder than normal listening levels. The left channel cut out with both sets of speakers but was normal powering one set.

After the recap and relay replacement and thorough deoxit of all the pots everything seemed to be back to normal but then again I have only been driving one set of speakers. Now all of a sudden the left channel cut out again driving only one set which hasn't happened before. If I slide the balance to the left and raise the volume you can hear the music at a low volume coming out the left side. If I raise the volume even further there is some static and a bit of pop and the left channel comes back in full volume. This fixes the issue for less than 30 seconds before it cuts out again. I originally thought it might have been a bad connection on the left amp board but I reflowed everything, adding solder where it seemed to be lacking and the problem hasn't gone away.

What do you guys think?

To me that sounds like an output transistor breaking down. Do you notice them getting hotter than the other channel or something like that?

I'm not very seasoned, but that's my two cents.

On the back of the receiver you should have pre amp out to power amp in jumpers. Use a set of RCA cables and swap the left and right pre out to amp in.

If the problem moves to the right speaker the problem is in the left preamp.

If the problem stays in the left the problem is in the left amp.

The problem you describe sounds like a dirty pot or switch.

Thanks for the tip. I'm away for the weekend but will look into it first thing Monday. I hope it's just a dirty pot or switch but I cleaned them all multiple times. Regardless, I will try again and report back.
