Marantz 2325 Question

Hi guys,

I have a 2325 that has to be restrung.

I have it routed so that it moves back and forth in the direction it should But it hangs up.

It will not travel the full length of the dial.

As many times as I have looked at the diagram, you would think I would have figured it out by now.

I did a search first but I actually need someone to confirm whether or not I am understanding the correct routing at the main tuner wheel.

I hope it' OK to post the following link with the diagram.
http://www.irebuildmarantz.com/marantz_2325_service.pdf

What I see is, that the section of string to the right as it comes out of the spring eyelet, goes right over the top of the pulley.

The section to the left winds around the pulley twice.

If this is correct, why is it hanging up and not traveling the full length of the dial ???

Would it even be possible for the gyro tuning wheel to be strung in a fashion that cause it hang at about half way across the dial.

It will travel from the lowest frequency on the dial to about half way across the dial.

This has me puzzled:scratch2:

I have to go out for a bit but I will check in later and see if anybody has a clue where I need to look for the problem.

I don't have a local shop to carry it to and I really don't want to ship this heavy boy off somewhere just to fix the Dial String.

Maybe it is the variable capacitor (the part with steel plates) that stops the travel. I may be wrong but I think you should start by closing the variable cap, putting the pointer on the left side by hand, and start to string in that position.

Thanks ecluser,

I think it is a timing problem,so to speak.
I don't think I described the routing as it should have been in my first post.
I'll look at it tomorrow maybe.

Jeff

I decided to look at it one more time because I didn't want to mess with tomorrow.

I made some adjustments and now it glides smoothly fro one side to the other.

This is the original factory string, by the way.

The reason it was off was because I took it off to get ready to replace some function lights.

I thought it would be easier and I think it will be to replace the lamps without worrying with the string.

Now that I know how it goes, I won't hesitate getting it out of my way.
This was the first dial string I have ever tinkered with and I must say it is not my favorite job.

roggom,

The 2325 is made a little different and doesn't have those screws you are talking about.

My 2285b has two of those screws.

As far as the stations being aligned on the dial, yes they are spot on the money.

dial re-string

I am having the same problem re-stringing my 2325 and I'd love to know what adjustments you made. I uploaded a couple of photos to show how I have it so far. I have the cord going twice around the white drum and I guess it appears to need more length, but I'm not sure how much because I thought I had it lined up according to the image in the service manual, which is of limited use. Any help will be most appreciated. On another note, the bead stringing cord I found at Michael's works perfectly, so if anyone is in search of dial cord this is cheap and good.

You need three wraps around the drum. I can get you some pictures tomorrow or the next day, the 2325 on my bench is in pieces at the moment.

Tom

Great - thanks Tom. I'd love to see a photo if you have a chance, but having the concrete info of 3 wraps around will help a bunch, I'm sure.

Here's a pic of the 2325 tuning drum. The pointer is sitting on 98MHz.

Excellent - thanks Tom. :thmbsp: I hope to get back to it in the next few days and I'll report back.

I finally got it! The service manual helps for the general path of the string but I have no idea why it doesn't address how to string it around the big drum. Three times was indeed a charm, but it took several tries to realize that you have to loop it around the drum once without hooking string to the spring, then hook it, and go around again. Keeping it tight, which I thought was going to be the big challenge, wasn't really that big a deal. If I can do it, anyone can - thanks Tom!

You ever gonna get that thing done Tom? haha

Hey Paul, maybe you should come up here and give me a hand!:D
Seriously, We are re-painting/papering a bedroom and the carpet guy is going to be here Tuesday so my hands have been full keeping up with that. The 2325 should be done and in the listening room by Wednesday.

Glad you got it! Dial cord re-stringing isn't my favorite task. I try to avoid it if possible.
