Marantz 2325 speaker click - no sound

Hi,
First post. I've been an audiokarma Google follower for some time now and decided to get myself an account. Awesome website. Anyways,

I have a Marantz 2325 receiver that could use some attention. Currently it powers on, all lights and gauges work and the speaker switch makes its "click" sound but I get no sound out of the speakers. Only a slight humming sound that does not increase or decrease with the volume control. I have no background in electronics so I'm hoping it's nothing real difficult but usually do things myself; though I know what's over my head. I live by sioux falls SD so reputable service repair is a 4+ hour drive and I want to avoid shipping all together.
Thanks.

Well the first thing i usually tell people to try is to push ALL the buttons in and out at least 10 times. In your situation, i would also ask if your headphones work. Hearing the relay is good. It could have corroded contacts. you may choose to pop the top and using something to tap on the relay. I would assume you will use common sense and not smack it with a hammer. The next thing i would try is to use a set of phono wires to connect the Pre amp into the main amp section. The internal connections could be dirty. While your in there, Make sure the amp sections are plugged in. You can barely see the connectors from the topside, but they are on your main amps, which stand up sideways on each side, and the connectors come in from the center of the receiver into the bottom inner section of the amp boards. There are two connectors per amp.

By the way, You have a beautiful receiver:thmbsp:

It is my favorite unit to listen to. They have enough guts to power most speakers and sound nice and warm. I listen to one every day. :music:

I just realized you said "Speaker click", not relay click.

The relay should click on its own about 2 seconds after you turn the receiver on. Do you hear this little click sound? Let us know,

John

Thanks for the quick replies and compliments. Love this thing.
Yesterday I tried plugging in a set of phono wires into the pre amp and main amp section and nothing, just a loud, quick cackle in the speakers after plugging in the R with the L plugged in first and vise versa. Previously when I cleaned it I sprayer out the connectors with a quality CBC and swab bed with Qtips. This had been sitting for 15 years in a smokers home = NASTY. Today I am going to try the headphones jack and make sure the amp connections are good.
Also, by speaker "click" I meant speaker relay click, lacking in correct terminology ha. When turning it on I visually see the speaker relay click over and make contact and appears to be clean.
And, if this makes a difference, I can plug in phono cords hooked to my ipod into the pre/main amp connections and music will play. But there is no stereo control whatsoever, only volume control on my ipod.
Thanks again, appreciate the help.

A look at the inside before cleaning. The pots are hard to get to on this reciever compared to others, but turn MUCH better after cleaning.

When plugged into the main-in jacks music plays.
That is a direct line to the amps and there will be no control on the 2325.
Be careful plugging into those.

Now, that tells me the amps are working.

Do the needles move when on FM?

Are the tape monitor switched OFF?

Is the a set of jumpers from pre-out to main-in?
If not, use an RCA cord to connect pre-out to main-in, L to L and R to R.

Report.

If you wish to. Take the bottom off and inspect the solder joints on the pre amp. That is the one in front that the selector switches are mounted on. look at the black plastic connector and were the pins are soldered to the board for cracks in the tracks,

I'd be looking at the two power supply voltages first, the +35 regulated and the approximately +13 volt one. I think that's where BH is going. Then what John said!

Ok, so I connected a RCA cable to the main/pre amp connections. I get nothing. Tape monitor is not on. The dials for FM tuning and Dolby level both function when scrolling through channels.
I do get a few faint crackling sounds out of the speakers when pushing the MAIN speaker button in. It does it only as the button is sliding in/out, and then no sound. Does this when hooked to REMOTE as well.
One thing to note, the power button does not wotk, so the previous owner had an in line switch installed on the power cord. Would this affect it's working ability? Previous owner said that it use to work when they had it installed years ago. I'll attach a picture.
Going to open it up tomorrow and check amp connection.

Kind of off topic, I bought this today......
Marantz 2385. And guess what.. no sound.
I got a pioneer sx780 that a guy was about to throw away. Extremely dirty, rained on thd day before. Bring it home and it works GREAT. I'm starting to question the "reliable" reputation of Marantz.

Edit: upon inspecting I am starting a new thread on this FILTHY beast.

2385 is no joke! 3rd most powerful in TOTL Marantz Receivers line up:):thmbsp:

Wait for the SX-780 to puke a power pack!

Marantz is reliable. Previous owners are suspect.

2325 can have diode problem in amp. Yours doesn't.
2385 can have connector problem. They are too rare to know any/all possible problems that may happen.

Try dousing the tape monitor switches and the guts of the selector switch in DeOxit. A good cleaning goes a long way and I find those two to be pretty problematic if dirty. Sound is getting through the amps when hooked up through main in, that's good. Run a signal (your ipod) through aux and hook a volt meter up to pre out. If you don't see any changes in AC voltage when you adjust the volume, something's wrong. Think of this as following your ipod's signal through the receiver. Find out where it stops, that's where your problem will be.

I just worked on one of these, the diodes mentioned in the service manual addendum were shot and I'd get electrical arcing in the relay. Kind of scary! Luckily no outputs were hurt in the process. I'm working on a 2235B right now and really wish it had the connectors the 2325 amp boards have. They make life very easy for the technician

Have an update. IT WORKS! And sounds amazing with my Polk M12s which can handle the new found power with ease.
Now for a relative embarrassing part on my end. The problem was the fuse on the power supply board (one with speaker relay). I had looked at it before and it looked connected/not blown but since it is such a tiny connection (3amp 250v) it only appeared together. I couldn't believe I made the mistake, as this was the first thing I checked in trying to diagnose the problem a couple weeks ago.
Anyways, it works. Sounds great with ear deadening power. As other reviews point out, it is a little boom and over time a bit exhausting to listen to at higher levels (3/8ths volume). I am a fan of the integrated 1976 dolby controls. Impressed really. All in all I will be keeping this gem for a very long time.
Thanks to everyone that assisted and tried helping me diagnose a problem; it is much appreciated! Now to get some boom out of my 2385.

Quick setup to hear her sing. All lights believed to be original. Original wood cover to go on tonight.

You should play it right side up, it cools better:D

Good you fixed it, and learned a few things along the way

try this, Keep the base at 1/4
mid at 2/3
treble high the tone mode "in"
loudness off
and restuff your speakers with that polyfill pillow stuff. just put enough in to fill it, don't cram it in. you may want to tap on the sides and see if they sound hollow. you may want to try lining the inside of the speaker box with sound dead'ner.
