Marantz 2330 - Next issue: Main Filter cap replacement

Took the bottom off my 2330 to get to the pots with some Deoxit a bit better, and noticed the 2 large filter caps have a slight leak. :no: Needless to say, I'll be replacing these before anything else.

Is there a recommended replacement cap/part for this unit? Looks like they're both 75V 15000uF... this was on each cap:

Never had to order/replace these before. Do I essentially unscrew the bottom connectors and top "rings" that hold them in place, and simply reinstall the new ones? Just want to be sure it's as easy as I think...

I see no mention of the physical size of the originals. It matters. (the first caps you found at Digikey are 50mm in dia., but over 5 1/2 inches tall...fine if you want to run it with the cover off for the rest of its days :)).

They look like 50mm. If so, I'd go with the caps from Mouser that blhagstrom recommended.

Nope, going up in voltage rating (a little) is a good thing. Allowing for the tolerance swings it makes sure you have enough rating to handle it.

Going up a bit in capacitance for filter caps is OK too if anyone was wondering. Gives a bit more headroom.
 
If I remember correctly, those are dual caps - i.e. 2 in each can. They can't be found any more, so you need to devise a bracket to hold 2 caps in the same diameter as the originals. I have cut a circle of 3/4" MDF in the diameter of the original clamp and then two smaller (3/4") holes for each of the caps. This is a trick stolen from Catrafter so you might look for posts from him - I think he has some excellent photos.

It certainly won't hurt to increase voltage but it's not necessary and may make it harder to find the correct size.

These (2330) are not dual cap cans.
 
Thanks again guys, caps ordered. Looks like the size of the Nichicon caps are basically the same size as what's in the 2330 right now. Should be a pretty close fit.

I'll update this thread once they show up and get installed in case it benefits others... again, thanks to all for the tips and pointers, very much appreciated. I assume these are basically plug and play, just watch the polarity and wiring... will take a few pictures for reference before swapping anything out.

Any other tips/suggestions to be aware of?
 
Yup, watch the wiring.

Be aware that new caps may contain some charge.
Try not to short the terminals.

Just wanted to say "Thanks!" again to blhagstrom and EchoWars for taking a few minutes to point me to the right filter caps and tips for installation.

The replacement Nichicon's (100V 15000 uF) showed up today from Mouser. Within one hour, they were installed and running. It literally took more time to orient them correctly (I reused the existing Marantz collars/rings) than anything else.

I can honestly say the receiver sounds noticeably different in a great way! Much better bottom end/bass and a somewhat more engaging sound stage with my JBL-166's. Never had the need to replace big-@ss caps like that before, but it really was a piece of cake, as long as you take your time and observe the wiring/polarity.

I did use one of those wooden lint-free swabs to hold the 4 wires for each cap's post after undoing them. Real simple to keep them together and in the right spot.

Also, for kicks, I wanted to "see" how truly bad the old, leaking caps were (note that the receiver still powered up and played with them). So, after they were uninstalled, I fired up an ESR Capacitance meter I had... results are attached. The one that had appeared to be the worst tested the best... the nicer of the 2 clocked in at 12220 uF .

In any event, hope my mini-adventure helps someone else! Wouldn't have tried it without the advice from the other member here. Thanks again guys. :music:

Enjoying the tunes now... any "break-in" time for these filter caps? Can't imagine it sounding much better...

Now for your next mission, Recapping the Power Supply and Pre amp board. I have a Elna silmic recapped 2330 and a nichicon recapped 2330. The silmic sounds more clear and warmer. (although the nichicon are not the Muse version)
Both receivers have Balls to the walls Bass.
Its a great feeling when you take on a challenge and win . Good for You!
These guys on here that help and share their hard earned knowledge are the Best:thmbsp:.

By the way, The 2330 was a one year (1977) production model with a total of 2943 produced. They look nice in a black case.

any "break-in" time for these filter caps?

After the silmic recap, I didn't care for its sound and after two weeks, it started to Open up and I now hear Fine details in the music i've never heard before.

. Interesting enough, I changed Every cap EXCEPT the Filter Caps.
I say Drive it like you stole it. Wear earplugs.... Both my 2330s will THUMP your chest if you lay into them. :D

I'm a Marantz 2330 owner too. I bought it new October 9th, 1977 from Macy's Department Store in Sacramento, CA. I still have the original receipt and salespersons business card. I'm in the process of going through it and refurbishing everything. My filter capacitors are leaking as well and will be replaced with all the others.

I am replacing the same caps on my 2330. I ordered the Nichion 100V 15000UF. They seem to be the same size from specs. I hope to get them 9/27. I see the Nichions are marked + and -. On the problem ones I see red dots on them Does this indicate those are the positive input and it is just a simple swap. Here is what I am contending with. The 2330 actually works just fine but I want to swap the 2 caps. I ordered LNR2A153MSE the spec sheet says diameter 51mm length 80mm. This looks to be a match for the originals. I ordered them from Digikey as they were cheaper than mouser???? Any pictures available with the new caps installed??
